Terrorism Derangement Syndrome

The GOP's scare tactics work so well because the public is terrified already.

America has slid back again into its own special brand of terrorism-derangement syndrome. Each time this condition recurs, it presents with more acute and puzzling symptoms. It's almost impossible to identify the cause, and it's doubtful there's a cure. The entire forensic team from House would need a full season to unravel the mystery of what it is about the American brain that renders us more terrified of terrorists today than we were five years ago and less trusting of government policies to protect us

The real problem is that too many people tend to follow GOP cues about how hopelessly unsafe America is, and they've yet again convinced themselves that we are mere seconds away from an attack. Moreover, each time Republicans go to their terrorism crazy-place, they go just a little bit farther than they did the last time, so that things that made us feel safe last year make us feel vulnerable today.

Policies and practices that were perfectly acceptable just after 9/11, or when deployed by the Bush administration, are now decried as dangerous and reckless. The same prominent Republicans who once celebrated open civilian trials for Zacarias Moussaoui and Richard Reid, the so-called "shoe bomber," now claim that open civilian trials endanger Americans (some Republicans have now even gone so far as to try to defund such trials). Republicans who once supported closing Guantanamo are now fighting to keep it open. And one GOP senator, who like all members of Congress must take an oath to uphold the Constitution, has voiced his concern that the Christmas bomber really needed to be "properly interrogated" instead of being allowed to ask for a lawyer.

.

In short, what was once tough on terror is now soft on terror. And each time the Republicans move their own crazy-place goal posts, the Obama administration moves right along with them.

It's hard to explain why this keeps happening. There hasn't been a successful terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. The terrorists who were tried in criminal proceedings since 9/11 are rotting in jail. The Christmas Day terror attack was both amateurish and unsuccessful. The Christmas bomber is evidently cooperating with intelligence officials without the need to resort to thumbscrews. In a rational universe, one might conclude that all this is actually good news. But in the Republican crazy-place, there is no good news. There's only good luck. Tick tock. And the longer they are lucky, the more terrified Americans have become.

This week Glenn Greenwald summarized how far the goal posts of normal have moved when he pointed out that "merely advocating what Ronald Reagan explicitly adopted as his policy—'to use democracy's most potent tool, the rule of law against' terrorists—is now the exclusive province of civil liberties extremists." Upon being elected to the U. S. Senate last month, Scott Brown declared: "Our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation—they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them." As Adam Serwer observed, "This is the new normal for Republicans: You can be denied rights not through due process of law but merely based on the nature of the crime you are suspected of committing. Brown's rhetorical framing, that jettisoning the legal system we've had for 200-plus years represents 'tradition' while granting suspected criminals the right to legal counsel represents liberalism gone mad is new, and I suspect we'll hear it again.

I have read several good explanations for why the GOP leadership has decided to make the case that processes that worked in the Bush administration (like civilian trials) won't work under Obama, and why policies that failed in the Bush administration (like torture or military tribunals) must be reinstated. Maybe it's simple obstructionism. Josh Gerstein points out that for Republicans seeking to capitalize on Obama's missteps, his feints and pivots on national security have proved fertile ground. And Greenwald concludes that "our establishment craves Bush/Cheney policies because it is as radical as they are."

But it's not just the establishment that opposes closing Guantanamo, trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, or reading Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab his Miranda rights. Polls show most Americans want Abdulmutallab tried by military commission, want Gitmo to remain open, and want KSM tried in a military commission, too. For those of us who are horrified by the latest Republican assault on basic legal principles, it's time to reckon with the fact that the American people are terrified enough to go along.

We're terrified when a terror attack happens, and we're also terrified when it's thwarted. We're terrified when we give terrorists trials, and we're terrified when we warehouse them at Guantanamo without trials. If a terrorist cooperates without being tortured we complain about how much more he would have cooperated if he hadn't been read his rights. No matter how tough we've been on terror, we will never feel safe enough to ask for fewer safeguards

Now I grant that it's awfully hard to feel safe when the New York Times is publishing stories about a possible terrorist attack by July. So long as there are young men in the world willing to stick a bomb in their pants, we will never be perfectly safe. And what that means is that every time there's an attack, or a near-attack, or a new Bin Laden tape, or a new episode of 24, we'll always be willing to go one notch more beyond the rules than we were willing to go last time.

Some of the very worst excesses of the Bush years can be laid squarely at the doorstep of a fictional construct: The "ticking time bomb scenario." Within minutes, any debate about terrorists and the law arrives at the question of what we'd be willing to do to a terrorist if we thought he had knowledge of an imminent terror plot that would kill hundreds of innocent citizens. The ticking time bomb metaphor is the reason we get bluster like this from Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, complaining that "5-6 weeks of 'time-sensitive information' was lost" because Abdulmutallab wasn't interrogated against his will upon capture.

But here's the paradox: It's not a terrorist's time bomb that's ticking. It's us. Since 9/11, we have become ever more willing to suspend basic protections and more contemptuous of American traditions and institutions. The failed Christmas bombing and its political aftermath have revealed that the terrorists have changed very little in the eight-plus years since the World Trade Center fell. What's changing—what's slowly ticking its way down to zero—is our own certainty that we can never be safe enough and our own confidence in the rule of law.

Speech: Scott Brown's speech to America

Atlas Shrugs
As prepared for delivery (hat tip KLO)

Thank you very much. I’ll bet they can hear all this cheering down in Washington, D.C.

And I hope they’re paying close attention, because tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken.

From the Berkshires to Boston, from Springfield to Cape Cod, the voters of this Commonwealth defied the odds and the experts. And tonight, the independent majority has delivered a great victory.

I thank the people of Massachusetts for electing me as your next United States senator.

Every day I hold this office, I will give all that is in me to serve you well and make you proud.

Most of all, I will remember that while the honor is mine, this Senate seat belongs to no one person and no political party - and as I have said before, and you said loud and clear today, it is the people’s seat.

Interim Senator Paul Kirk has completed his work as a senator by appointment of the governor, and for the work he has done, I thank him. The people, by their votes, have now filled the office themselves, and I am ready to go to Washington without delay.

I also want to thank Martha Coakley for her call of congratulations. A hard contest is now behind us, and now we must come together as a Commonwealth.

This special election came about because we lost someone very dear to Massachusetts, and to America. Senator Ted Kennedy was a tireless and big-hearted public servant, and for most of my lifetime was a force like no other in this state. His name will always command the affection and respect by the people of Massachusetts, and the same goes for his wife Vicki. There’s no replacing a man like that, but tonight I honor his memory, and I pledge my very best to be a worthy successor.

I said at the very beginning, when I sat down at the dinner table with my family, that win or lose we would run a race which would make us all proud. I kept my word and we ran a clean, issues oriented, upbeat campaign - and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

When I first started running, I asked for a lot of help, because I knew it was going to be me against the machine. I was wrong, it was all of us against the machine. And after tonight we have shown everyone that - now - you are the machine.

I'm glad my mom and dad, brothers, sisters, and so many family members are here tonight.

Once again, before I go any further, I want to introduce somebody very special... That is my wife, Gail.

And as you know, my wife Gail couldn't join me on the campaign trail because of her work as a Boston TV journalist. But I will let you in on a little secret. She didn't stay neutral today, and she voted for the winner. I rely as always, on Gail's love and support and that of our beautiful daughters.

Arianna will be returning a day or two late to her pre-med studies at Syracuse, because she’s been giving her all to this campaign. As always, Arianna and her sister Ayla have been a joy to Gail and me, and we're so grateful to them both. Even before her campaign performances, millions of Americans had already heard Ayla’s amazing voice on “American Idol.” As Boston College basketball fans know, she’s also pretty good on the court.

If the President thinks they’ve got basketball talent at the White House, I ask him to pick his best teammate and find some time to play two-on-two with Ayla and me.

I’m grateful to all those from across Massachusetts who came through for me even when I was a long shot. I especially thank a friend who was there with encouragement from the very beginning, and helped show us the way to victory - former Governor Mitt Romney.

I’ll never forget the help of another man who took the time to meet with me months ago - who told me I could win, and gave me confidence for the fight. It was all so characteristic of a truly great and heroic American, and tonight I thank my new colleague, Senator John McCain.

On a night like this, when so many people mark your name on a statewide ballot, you think back to the first people who gave you a chance and believed. For the trust they placed in me, and for all they have taught me, I thank my neighbors and friends in my Senate district and especially my hometown of Wrentham. The cause and victory that all America has seen tonight started right there with all of you.

Let me tell you when I first got the feeling something big was happening in this campaign. It was when I was driving along and spotted a handmade, Scott Brown yard sign that I hadn’t actually put there myself.

This little campaign of ours was destined for greater things than any of us knew, and the message went far beyond the name on the sign.

It all started with me, my truck, and a few dedicated volunteers. It ended with Air Force One making an emergency run to Logan. I didn't mind when President Obama came here and criticized me - that happens in campaigns. But when he criticized my truck, that's where I draw the line.

We had the machine scared and scrambling, and for them it is just the beginning of an election year filled with surprises. They will be challenged again and again across this country. When there’s trouble in Massachusetts, there’s trouble everywhere - and now they know it.

In every corner of our state, I met with people, looked them in the eye, shook their hand, and asked them for their vote. I didn’t worry about their party affiliation, and they didn’t worry about mine. It was simply shared conviction that brought us all together.

One thing is clear, voters do not want the trillion-dollar health care bill that is being forced on the American people.

This bill is not being debated openly and fairly. It will raise taxes, hurt Medicare, destroy jobs, and run our nation deeper into debt. It is not in the interest of our state or country - we can do better.

When in Washington, I will work in the Senate with Democrats and Republicans to reform health care in an open and honest way. No more closed-door meetings or back room deals by an out of touch party leadership. No more hiding costs, concealing taxes, collaborating with special interests, and leaving more trillions in debt for our children to pay.

In health care, we need to start fresh, work together, and do the job right. Once again, we can do better.

I will work in the Senate to put government back on the side of people who create jobs, and the millions of people who need jobs - and as President John F. Kennedy taught us, that starts with an across the board tax cut for individuals and businesses that will create jobs and stimulate the economy. It's that simple!

I will work in the Senate to defend our nation’s interests and to keep our military second to none. As a lieutenant colonel and 30-year member of the Army National Guard, I will keep faith with all who serve, and get our veterans all the benefits they deserve.

And let me say this, with respect to those who wish to harm us, I believe that our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation - they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them.

Raising taxes, taking over our health care, and giving new rights to terrorists is the wrong agenda for our country. What I've heard again and again on the campaign trail, is that our political leaders have grown aloof from the people, impatient with dissent, and comfortable in the back room making deals. And we can do better.

They thought you were on board with all of their ambitions. They thought they owned your vote. They thought they couldn’t lose. But tonight, you and you and you have set them straight.

Across this country, we are united by basic convictions that need only to be clearly stated to win a majority. If anyone still doubts that, in the election season just beginning, let them look to Massachusetts.

Fellow citizens, what happened in this election can happen all over America. We are witnesses, you and I, to the truth that ideals, hard work, and strength of heart can overcome any political machine. We ran a campaign never to be forgotten, and led a cause that deserved and received all that we could give it.

And now, because of your independence, and your trust, I will hold for a time the seat once filled by patriots from John Quincy Adams to John F. Kennedy and his brother Ted. As I proudly take up the duty you have given me, I promise to do my best for Massachusetts and America every time the roll is called.

I go to Washington as the representative of no faction or interest, answering only to my conscience and to the people. I’ve got a lot to learn in the Senate, but I know who I am and I know who I serve.

I’m Scott Brown,

I'm from Wrentham,

I drive a truck, and I am nobody’s senator but yours.

Thank you very much.

Saying No to Emperor Obama

Obama’s narcissism and arrogance will blind him to the message of the Massachusetts victory.Canada Free Press.com

By Alan Caruba Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Yes, it’s true. The emperor has no clothes. Even in a State where you cannot swing a dead cat without hitting a dozen Democrats, the voters said “No.”

“We don’t want your odious Medicare ‘reform’. We don’t want to be forced to buy insurance. We don’t want a bill that exists only because every sweetheart deal and other form of bribery was used to get it to this point in the Senate.” And, ignored by the media, it was no to amnesty for illegal aliens as well, another issue of Scott Brown’s race.

The significance of the Massachusetts victory for Scott Brown is the repudiation of Barack Hussein Obama, his policies, and his performance in office.

It wasn’t the first time the voters sent the White House this message. They told him to buzz off in Virginia and they told him to get lost in New Jersey. This is a tangible voter backlash against profligate spending and excessive taxation.

Come November, the voters, Democrats, Republicans, and independents will come together to clean house in Washington, D.C. It takes no great punditry to see that coming. If the midterms were held tomorrow, the result would be the same.

It is almost beyond comprehension how Obama could have engineered a failed presidency within the space of just one year. He got a lot of help from Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as mendacious and imperious an individual to have ever held that office. He got a lot of help from Majority Leader Harry Reid, a scowling, malicious cockroach whom the voters of Nevada will remove in November.

Obama’s narcissism and arrogance will blind him to the message of the Massachusetts victory. He and his press secretary, Robert “Glib” Gibbs, will put out a statement that will dismiss the historic event as just an aberration, but the aberration is Obama!

So, stand up and take a bow, Massachusetts!

Home to the Pilgrims;
home to the Boston massacre when British troops fired on protesters in 1770;
home to the 1773 tea party to protest taxes; and
birthplace of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Sam Adams, Elbridge Gerry, Josiah Bartlett, Roger Sherman, and John Hancock, signers of the Declaration of Independence!

Those first Americans led the resistance to the greatest power of their day, Great Britain, and its king.

For all the years Obama taught the U.S. Constitution at the University of Chicago Law School, he either never really understood it or never believed it means what it says.

He never understood that real Americans will not be pushed around, cheated of their Constitutional birthright, or be lied to.

They will push back.

A former emperor, Napoleon of France, spent his last days as an exile on St. Helena. It would not surprise me if Emperor Obama spends his on one of Hawaii’s islands.

AKA Obama, The Emperor, Has No Clothes Obama, The Emperor, Has No Clothes We’ve Reached The Tipping Point And His Programs Must Be Stopped

TheSteadyDrip.com Sunday, January 17, 2010
By HERB DENENBERG, The Bulletin

If we had a Winston Churchill in the White House, America would still be in mortal danger and we would have a long, tough fight for survival ahead. We face a threat of Islamic terrorism as dangerous as any of the many threats of our history including that of Nazi Germany, Soviet Communism, Italian Fascism, and Japanese Imperialism. We face economic problems and international competition that call into question our ability to maintain the productive economy necessary to support the military machine needed for survival. We have a failed educational system that will not provide the scientific innovation and educated personnel and other advances necessary to maintain economic viability in the 21st Century. We have a biased, dishonest, and fraudulent mainstream media that misleads and deceives rather than informing and educating the public on the issues of our times.

But we don’t have this best-case scenario in the White House — we have the worst-case scenario. Yes, it’s about time America wakes up to the fact that we have a radical, leftist, socialist politician who still carries the trademark of the corrupt Cook County Chicago political machine from which he came and who has populated the White House with wild radicals and thugs willing to use intimidation and anything else if needed to achieve their goals. The Chicago machine adopts the Saul Alinsky Rules for Radicals that says the end justifies the mean, i.e., anything goes. On top of that our president is incompetent. At this time of the greatest danger to America, we have another even greater danger: a president not up to the job and not fit for the job.

Someone has to ask the president, “Have you no decency? Have you no character? Have you no honesty? Do your words and your promises mean nothing? Are you willing to justify any means to achieve your ends?” Yes, we are well past the tipping point, and it is time for the obvious conclusion, “The emperor has no clothes.” If we don’t recognize Mr. Obama for what he is by now, we must be clueless and hopeless.

President Barack Hussein Obama has clearly demonstrated he is exactly what many expected and even much worse. For example, right from the beginning, early in the last presidential campaign, I said Mr. Obama was a world-class fraud, phony, faker, fibber, and four-flusher and a radical, liberal, leftist socialist, America-hater to boot. Now, I realize that description may sound strong, but it wasn’t strong enough. Mr. Obama is much worse than that.

Every politician may break campaign promises. But even the most corrupt ones have limits. Mr. Obama has no limits. At the very core of his campaign, he claimed to be the great post-partisan, non-partisan unifier to bring us all together and listen to every side of every issue. He told us a gazillion times there are no Red States and Blue States but only the United States. He claimed a new politics, with openness and transparency in all matters. He was the great courier of hope and change. But that was just campaign rhetoric and even post-election rhetoric. He has demonstrated he is the exact opposite of his basic claims. He is highly partisan, content to shutout, shut up, and ignore Republican ideas and Republican voices. He rejects transparency, and is as secretive and opaque as possible. Other politicians have broken campaign promises, but never on a scale such as this involving the promises most central to their campaigns, and never before so openly and brazenly with so little regard for the citizens who were sold this fraudulent bill of campaign goods.

For proof of Mr. Obama’s breaking all of his core promises, look at what is going on with ObamaCare. Everyone probably remembers his promise, repeated at least eight times, that negotiations on the health-care bill would be televised on C-SPAN and would be streaming on the Internet. Among his statements: “We’re going to do all these negotiations on C-SPAN…We will work on the process publicly … These negotiations will be on C-SPAN.” He constantly explained that putting all negotiations (yes, he said, “all”) on C-SPAN would assure that everyone could see for themselves whether their Congressmen were putting forth arguments on behalf of insurance companies, drug companies, and other special interest groups or making arguments on behalf of most of their constituents. You can hear him make this promise by going to the Internet, where at least eight videos of Mr. Obama making that promise are collected (www.thenakedemperornews.com).

The other examples of Mr. Obama’s breaking his promise of transparency and openness in every way can be cited that are just as extreme as the C-SPAN promise. The negotiations to reconcile the Senate and House version of ObamaCare are being carried out behind closed doors in secrecy. Republicans are not even represented.

And his core promise of bipartisanship has also been demonstrated to be a total fraud, which is what Mr. Obama is. He called for bipartisanship and a new politics all during the campaign and continues to do so (apparently in an attempt to silence Dick Cheney and other leading critics of his policies that are making America vulnerable to terrorism). But Mr. Obama’s words and rhetoric have no connection with his actions and programs. Republicans have had no part in drafting the legislation and their ideas and amendments have been ignored. There has been no real attempt to adopt the many sound suggestions and legislative proposals made by Republicans, such as permitting the purchase of health insurance across state lines and doing something to curb malpractice lawsuit abuse. Mr. Obama and the Democratic Congress have been strictly partisan, and haven’t even been willing to adopt a token idea from across the aisle. They do not want one note of dissent and not one baby compromise. They have made it clear that ObamaCare will be jammed down the throat of the American people regardless of their views and regardless of democratic values and traditions. Even a question about the constitutionality of Obamacare was fobbed off by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as if the reporter asking the question must be deranged for even raising the issue. In fact, there are serious questions about aspects of the ObamaCare proposals.

What is even more outrageous than breaking the most fundamental Obama promises is the attempt to pretend they are not being broken. Obama’s White House actually refuses to explain why these promises are being broken. In fact, they won’t even respond to questions about the C-SPAN promise. When Mr. Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, was asked about it, he simply ignored the question and did so the next day when the same question was asked. When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked about it, she went into a speech claiming this was the most open and transparent legislative process in memory. Her reply was Orwellian, being the exact opposite of the truth. The Obama team apparently thinks the Americans are totally idiots willing to believe brazen, blatant, bold-faced lies.

This isn’t hope and change. This isn’t politics as usual. This is worse than politics as usual. This is the corrupt Chicago-style machine politics of thugs and intimidators. Recall that Mr. Obama came out of the corrupt Chicago machine and even refused to work with those trying to bring about its reformation. And now we see he has brought the corruption and thuggery of that style of politics to the White House. We not only have that style of politics in control in the White House, but even worse, its agenda is the radical, liberal, leftist, socialist program that runs contrary to American values and the very principles of our Founding Fathers. As we know, right before his election, Mr. Obama said he was going to fundamentally transform America. And that’s what he is doing, but transforming it by destroying its constitutional structure.

He is involved in an unprecedented expansion of government, explosion of spending, national debts and deficits, taxation, and regulation of every aspect of American life. His debt is unsustainable, and his expansion of government is so great that it is going to squeeze out and kill the private sector. That government expansion will also kill American entrepreneurship upon which America’s productivity has always depended. At the same time, it is contracting our liberties. A gargantuan government controls almost everything and that means the private market and the private citizen control almost nothing. His signature legislation on health-care is an attempt to control America and Americans. The Obama agenda is nothing more than the “road to serfdom.”

If that’s not bad enough, this corrupt Chicago-style politician has demonstrated he is incompetent, as this column has documented. (See, for example, “Time for a Change? Obama’s Mistakes Say So,” Jan. 10.) In addition, he seems detached from our major threat of Islamic terrorism. As Charles Krauthammer has pointed out, his initial responses to the Christmas terrorism in Detroit sounded more like a police report than a leader responding to an existential threat to American survival. Mr. Obama spoke of a “suspect” who was an “isolated extremist” who “allegedly” committed certain acts. It took him three days to come up with that initial, pathetically lame response. Only on his fifth attempt did Mr. Obama finally recognize we are at war. But, his earlier responses probably reflected his true views and feeling, and his fifth attempt was probably an act, scripted by his advisors who realized his early statements were turning the public off.

Mr. Obama and the radicals and thugs now entrenched in the White House are bad enough, and are a certain formula for the destruction of America. But making a bad situation worse is the mainstream media, which acts more as an advocate for Mr. Obama and his programs and less like a fair and balanced source of information the public needs to have. Further compounding this lethal formula is a Democratic Party, led by the Obama/Reid/Pelosi triumvirate that is a virtual rubber stamp of any program. And that party has adopted the Obama philosophy based on Rules for Radicals that says the ends justifies the means. In other words, anything goes. That’s why they are content to ignore the public’s views and the traditions and precedents of Congress, and jam through legislation that is not analyzed, debated, or even read. They are immoral, unprincipled zealots that put their agenda above that of the American people, American values, and the American Constitution.

So, it should be past the tipping point. We should be at the point when most Americans can say, “The Emperor has no clothes.” If Americans don’t stop this headlong rush to destroy America, there will soon be no America left to save. Now is the time. The citizens of this greatest nation on earth have to rise up, protest the Obama agenda, and stop it before it succeeds in transforming America into something our Founding Fathers of yesterday and our citizens of today would not even recognize.

We’ve had more than enough of Mr. Obama’s plans. And we have to start acting like we mean it. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country… and to stop Mr. Obama’s plans to destroy America, as we know it.

God Bless Massachusetts

Canada Free Press
By Mike Konkel Monday, January 18, 2010

It Is a Freedom Thing

One can hardly think of Massachusetts without thinking about Kennedy….all of them
. When I was growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was a junior in high school, John Kennedy got assassinated. I was a ward of the county since my 7th or 8th year, dysfunctional family and all, and in November, 1963 I was residing at Perpetual Help Boy’s Home, a place when we weren’t doing homework, we were polishing the linoleum floors with cinder blocks on top of army blanket pieces.

I wrote a poem at that time and sent it in to some writer’s magazine:

He traveled through the town spreading faith and good cheer
remembering what happened doth bring forth a tear,
to the eyes of the old and to the eyes of the young,
over a President, now sung…

A man of valor, of courage and kindness,
who hath fired that shot, hath fired in blindness.

I don’t know if it ever got past the person’s garbage can who opened the envelope but the point is Kennedy was a democrat and back then, they were just all right with me.

Six weeks later, 19 days after my 17th birthday, I was on my way to Marine boot camp and one year and six weeks later I was fighting in Vietnam, the war John Kennedy thought was important to win…important to beat communism.

I went to Vietnam twice, Marines did 13 month tours and mine spanned mid-65 to mid-66 and then a year in language school, back in mid-68 to mid-69 and had friends from that “Dirty Water” state. I spent 9 years total in the Corps and distinctly remember this boot corporal from Boston, when I was between tours and stationed at Camp Elmore (Norfolk, Va)(FMFLant), one in particular used to zoom around in a little TR3 with the radio blaring especially when he cranked up that ‘Dirty Water’ song. We were buds.

I didn’t change much….spent many years really apathetic after we quit Vietnam and I doubt if my fellow Marines from Boston or Texas or wherever, really changed that much. Once the democratic party was a proud party…they had good intentions. I loved John Kennedy and Bobby. I loved Bobby’s passion and maybe I was just young but I knew instinctively that when me, other poor white trash like me along with my bro’s from the hood were the only ones in Vietnam….something was going on.

The democratic party and America are now watching, almost idly, as progressives make a giant raid on our Republic…oh please, let us throw in the elitist republicans like Richard Lugar (I live in Indiana now) who factored hugely in the acceptance of President Ubama’s czardom.

Massachusetts is simply joining the rest of America in awakening to the evils under the dome in DC. And all at once I am proud of the people that produced Bobby and John Kennedy…Patrick, this is a school day, go to bed early tonight. I do hope Martha Coakley doesn’t get anywhere near Kabul, Afghanistan….even though I hear there aren’t any terrorists there anymore….moved to Pakistan and Yemen you know. Hey, Martha, some actually did move to New York City you know.

It is difficult on an individual level or on a corporate level to turn back to true north after making so many damn wrong turn in one’s life, and often not much fun in doing so. But when you don’t know how to get back to where you started, when it looks gummed up left and right…there is always up. Prodigal sons and daughters eventually, look up.

Massachusetts is looking up and looking good. This is not about party, this is about the American Republic and we all know it.
