Pakistan Governor Assassinated

Salman Taseer, the governor of the Panjab, was murdered by one of his own bodyguards today. The Panjab, also known as the Punjab, is one of the most populous regions of the South Asian country. The story is horrifying:

“A guard jumped out of a car with a flashing light on top of it. He pointed his Kalashnikov at [Taseer's] window and blasted it,” said one witness.

As he was led away Qadri, a 26-year-old with a curly beard, told photographers he was “proud” to have killed Taseer because he was a “blasphemer”.

Of course, this is a real problem for the country, which now faces the potential for a collapse of the current government after one of the key coalition partners left Ali Zardari’s ruling administration. This is bad news, indeed.
