I Remember "Mama"
"Corinne" - 1916 - 2002
Gene Austin - Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue (1926)
In appearance, "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue" best describes my mother and oh, how Dad loved to sing that song to her! Her name was Corinne, but to all of us, she was "Mama" and if I had one word to describe Mama, it would be "cement", for that is how our family stayed together throughout the years. She was the "cement" that kept all of us (and there were many of us - with 3 sisters and two brothers) together during holidays and family gatherings.
Growing up, my memories of Mama were of a gentle lady who loved music. If the radio wans't on, Mama would play the piano and all of us would sit around begging her to play "just one more" song. But that isn't what made Mama beautiful in our eyes; it was her kindness towards others, never complaining of her own difficulties (and raising 6 children was difficult even in those days!).
As adults, we each found our own ways to bring happiness to Mama. Personally, for me, taking Mama out for a day of shopping and a nice restaurant are some of my best memories. We laughed like two school girls over what some people would consider "silly" stuff; and I have always thought of Mama as my best friend. She always knew just how to encourage me, comfort me during my own difficulties, and Mama was the best medicine for anyone "hurting" because she knew how to heal emotional wounds.
Yesterday, my own children came to visit and we had a great day! However, whenever this particular day arrives each spring, memories of Mama always fill my mind of the lady I miss today. One of her favorite songs was "Memories" and another, "Laura's Theme". So, for the blessed memory of Mama, I share those songs with you today.
