The Los Angeles Times reports that the Quartet (the U.S, European Union, Russia and the UN) has said it may formally recognize a Palestinian state if peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are not renewed.
This may be a dumb question, but how can there be negotiations between the two sides when one side has been told that it will get everything it wants if the negotiations break down? What incentive do the Palestinians have to compromise (the essence of negotiation) if they will ultimately get everything they want anyway?
The answer: they don't. The announcement is a veiled way of telling Israel: to hell with you, you either do what we say…or you do what we say. Israel must accept a Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem.
America's role too has changed. In the past America would have vetoed plans that completely disregard Israel's security. Now it has joined arms with the rest of the Quartet.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton signaled last week that international patience over the stalled peace process was growing thin and that the recent Arab world unrest made a resolution of the conflict more pressing. She promised "active American leadership" and a reinvigorated U.S. approach that would be announced in coming weeks. And what would this Palestinian state be like? Peaceful and democratic? Well, what incentive would such a state have to refrain from violence given its unconditional international backing? Far more likely, the new Palestinian state would be quickly overrun by Hamas, which would use its newly gained territory to launch rockets at Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and every other part of Israel.
"The status quo between Palestinians and Israelis is no more sustainable than the political systems that have crumbled in recent months," Clinton told an audience at the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Washington. Some viewed the statement as a signal to Netanyahu to move quickly with his own plan.
Surely the Quartet must realize they are setting up conditions for an anarchic, failed radical Islamist state on a weakened Israel's borders? What could be their motivation for that?
Could it be they've decided it's time for the state of Israel to come to an end?
Obama held a seder at the White House on Monday night.
On Saturday, he delivered a Passover message to the Jewish people:
"The story of Passover — which recalls the passage of the children of Israel from bondage and repression to freedom and liberty — inspires hope that those oppressed and enslaved can become free," Obama said in a statement. "This year, that ancient instruction is reflected in the daily headlines as we see modem stories of social transformation and liberation unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa. Against the backdrop of change, we continue to pray for peace between Israel and her neighbors…"
It seems like a non-sequitir. Why talk about Arab liberation in a holiday message aimed at Jews, unless he feels that Jews are somehow implicated in that liberation?
In Obama's Passover story, it seems, Palestinians are the people who need to be liberated and Israel is the sacrificial lamb.
Note:
I have no idea what the motivation of the "Quartet" is in pushing Israel's back to the wall; nor, do I believe since Obama stepped into the White House is this administration a friend of Israel's. However, unlike Obama, who refuses to defind America's enemies, those who love both America and Israel are wise enough to KNOW the enemy and are not afraid to name them, one by one, unlike the majority of the main stream media. There is nothing new under the sun and the Pharoah's of yesterday are no different than those of today.
Israel will not become the "sacrifical lamb", for the angel of the first Passover shall pass over Israel again. Amen.
