Nearly 50 U.S. Congressmen have signed a bi-partisan letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, telling him to pressure the Palestinian Authority to halt against Israel and urge Abbas to get rid of terrorists.
The letter, originated by Republican Rep. Steve Austria and Democratic Rep. Steve Rothman, began circulating two weeks ago and has gained 46 signatures, while 27 senators endorsed a similar letter, according to The Hill.
The anti-incitement campaign picked up speed after the of five members of the Fogel family in Samaria three weeks ago.
Majorities of two key committees – the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Appropriations Foreign Operations subcommittee – singed the letter. The committee wields power by closely following Israel-Palestinian Authority negotiations, which have been at a standstill for two years following PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s refusal to accept direct talks without pre-conditions.
The letter gained unwitting support from the , which actively campaigns against any Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria and backs talks with the Hamas terrorist organization. Hamas is defined as a terrorist organization by the United States government.
J Street said the letter presented “a biased and inaccurate picture of the current status of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict." But a Democratic aide who helped organize the petition to President Obama told The Hill, "The fact that J Street attacked the letter helped get more members of Congress to sign on."
Eight Congressmen who joined the J Street letter objection also signed the letter against incitement.
