The first month of 2011 saw an increase in attacks including Molotov cocktails and explosives. Projectiles continued to be launched from the Gaza Strip
Despite a few weeks of calm in the region, communities in southern Israel were hit with Grad missiles and a mortar shell on the last night of January, Monday (Jan. 31). One missile landed near a wedding celebration in Netivot, damaging a vehicle and causing four people to be treated for shock. Another missile fell in the town of Ofakim and a mortar shell landed in an open field in the Eshkol Regional Council.
Overall, the month of January saw an increase in number of attacks with a total of 83 attacks as opposed to December’s 74, according to a report published on Wednesday (Feb. 3) by the Israel Security Agency (ISA).
The increase was particularly noticeable in the Judea and Samaria region, but a slight increase was also recorded in Jerusalem. Despite a decrease in attacks from the Gaza Strip in comparison to December, the number of Gaza Strip attacks is still higher than that of November and October.
Data from the report shows that three security personnel were injured from Molotov cocktails in Judea and in Jerusalem. Most of January’s attacks in the Judea and Samaria region and in Jerusalem consisted of Molotov cocktails. Explosives, grenades and live fire from small arms were also used in 53 of the attacks.
In terms of regions surrounding the Gaza Strip, the IDF has recorded that the Eshkol Regional Council, home to approximately 10,100 residents, was hit by 14 projectiles in January. The Ashkelon Shore Regional Council, home to approximately 13,000, was hit by five. Both the Sha’ar Hanegev regional council, home to 6,500 residents, and the Sdot Negev Regional Council, home to 8,000, suffered approximately six attacks.
The ISA reported that altogether, during the course of January, 17 rockets and 26 mortar shells were fired at Israel, as opposed to 15 rockets and 38 mortar shells in December.
