January 12, 2011 - New England Blizzard

East coast winter storm alert: Snowfall totals, flight cancellations

  • January 11th, 2011 9:47 am ET

How much snow is on the way for the Northeast? As a classic nor 'easter heads up the East Coast Tuesday into Wednesday, NOAA reports that snowfall totals of 8 to 18 inches are expected along the I-95 corridor from New Jersey into New England. Flight delays and cancellations are expected across the Northeast.

Winter storm alerts have been issued in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire.
Tuesday's storm will develop first in Washington and Baltimore on Tuesday afternoon. The snowfall should reach Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford and Providence late into the night on Tuesday and pick up strength during the Wednesday morning commute as it heads north to Boston and Portland.

Poor visibility on roads and disruption to air travel will be the standard fare in this winter storm. Blizzard conditions may develop on Wednesday morning and last through much of the day in parts of New England and Long Island.

Flight cancellations: If you are traveling on Tuesday or Wednesday, expect a disruption in air travel from Chicago eastward through the Northeast. Snow that already hit Atlanta is still causing problems with an estimated 1900 flights cancelled in/out of Atlanta today. FlightAware.com reports that as the storm progresses, it is expected to affect DC and New York, with the potential for many more flight cancellations.  Jet Blue, Southwest, Delta, US Air updates
How will this snowstorm affect people locally here in Rhode Island? According to NBC 10 in Providence, the storm is expected to bring 6-12 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph in the ocean state, making for dangerous driving on Wednesday morning and the potential for power outages.

Note:  Yes, I live in New England and power outages are being reported throughout the area.  I thought this would be a good break from politics, to show some pictures of the blizzard we are experiencing.  The photos below are sent in to our Manchester, NH TV Station, WMUR-TV.  For more photos, be sure to visit WMUR-TV NEW HAMPSHIRE.
