Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Joins the Rebellion

World Threats

Egyptian Army

Debka is reporting that the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood has told its followers to join the rebellion against the Mubarak government.
The Mubarak regime was badly shaken Thursday night, Jan. 27, when Egypt’s most powerful opposition movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, ordered its teeming membership to join the protest movement raging in Cairo and other cities since Tuesday after Friday (Jan. 28) prayers.

Analysis. At the moment Debka appears to be the only source with updated information. Part of yesterday’s articles included the comment that foreign journalists had been restricted from covering the riots.
The question right now is the position and loyalty of the Egyptian Army. Yesterday’s article said that Egypt had placed four armored divisions on alert and canceled all leaves. This will provide plenty of firepower if the Army is willing to fire on its own people to support the Mubarak government. In addition, Mohammad El Baradei, former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has returned to Egypt to be available to take over in case the Mubarak government fails. It will not help the suppression of the riots to have a replacement leader waiting.
It would appear that we will know tomorrow what Egypt’s fate will be. As I see it, all depends upon the loyalty of the Army.
