Is America really a Judeo-Christian nation? The Christian influence is of course beyond any doubt. All the Presidents were at least nominally Christian, as were many great Americans such as the Wright Brothers and Alexander Graham Bell. But how much of a role did the Jews play in creating American culture?
Take the All-American doll Barbie. She’s Jewish. Or at least her creator, Ruth Handler, who also founded Mattel, is. (So is the guy who created Toys R Us, Charles Lazarus.) Maybe she should’ve been driving the American sports car, the Corvette, developed by Zora Arkus-Duntov. Or maybe she should just play with the Teddy Bear, created by Rose and Morris Michtom.
Don’t want to play with dolls and prefer real women? Maybe you could go to a Jewish store called Victoria’s Secret and get some lipstick, developed by Maurice Levy in 1915, as a present.
Nothing exemplifies American clothes like blue jeans. They were invented by a Jew name Levy Strauss. Or maybe you like other Jewish brands like the 1980s favorite Jordache? Looking for something more high class? Try clothes made by Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lifshitz), Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and DKNY (Donna Karan).
Do you prefer Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts? Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen-Dazs? Doesn't matter, all Jewish.
But back to games. What’s more American than Bingo for senior citizens and the children’s video game consoles (an example of game consoles would be Nintendo and Xbox)? Both created by Jews. But really, what toy do American men love more than Robert Adler’s remote control? Grab a hot dog at a baseball game? Thank a Jew for starting the tradition.
And what about our newest toys – computers. Intel was founded by a Jew named Andrew Grove. Two young Jews Sergei Brin and Larry Page (half-Jewish on mother’s side) created Google. Daniel Bernstein created Google’s Gmail. Cisco, Oracle, Dell, Palm, ICQ, RealNetworks and PayPal – all Jewish.
Nothing exemplifies American economic power today as much as the New York Stock Exchange. At least four of the founders of NYSE (Benjamin Mendes Seixas, Ephraim Hart, Bernard Hart and Alexander Zuntz) were Jewish. Bernie Madoff, now famous for his multi-billion Ponzi scheme, was once a young genius who created the technology needed to create NASDAQ.
Goldman Sachs is named after Marcus Goldman and Samuel Sachs. Emmanuel and Henry Lehman were the famous Lehman brothers.
For better or for worse, Jews have been instrumental in developing economic theories from the far-right to the far-left. Karl Marx’s Communism was the scourge Americans fought against. But Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman was a conservative economist and the father of the Chicago School of Economic Thought. Jews Ayn Rand and Ludwig von Mises were primary Libertarian theorists. Another Jew David Ricardo founded classical economics, though, like Marx, he was not an American.
However, the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Economics was a Jew. So was the second one. And the third. And the fourth. And the last one. And the guy before the last American winner. And another guy before him. You get the idea.
Internationally, nothing spreads American culture more than Hollywood. Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, MGM, Viacom, Dreamworks SKG, Warner Brothers, Miramax, Paramount Pictures and New Line Cinema were all either founded or co-founded by Jews.
James Bond anyone? He’s based on a Jewish spy Sidney Reilly.
The Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious award given to journalists. It is named after Joseph Pulitzer, a half-Jew (since Jews are an ethnicity as well as a religion, a person could be a half-Jew).
Edward Bernays is considered the father of public relations. Bell Bernbach was an advertising pioneer. Ron Popeil is the inventor of infomercials.
Probably the most famous advertising line in recent years is “Got Milk?” Must be kosher milk because Jay Schulberg created that line.
Who’s the most famous character in commercials? Probably Ronald McDonald who was developed by Oscar Goldstein.
But Ronald McDonald isn’t the country’s favorite Jew – Jesus is. So naturally, Jews authored or co-authored seven out of the ten most popular American Christmas songs.
But Jesus was not the only Jew who cured the sick (he was, however, the only one who walked on water and probably the only one who worked as a carpenter). The Lasker Award, created by a Jew named Albert Lasker, is known as “America’s Nobel Prize” in medicine.
No disease caused as much panic in this country as polio. That is until a Jew named Jonas Salk invented a vaccine for it.
Genetic engineering, laser, cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator were all Jewish inventions.
But what really made the United States the greatest empire since Rome is its military might with nuclear bombs as its most feared weapons. Albert Einstein revolutionized physics. Niels Bohr explained the atomic structure. Leo Szilard proved the possibility of a nuclear chain reaction. Robert Oppenheimer developed the atom bomb. Edward Tell made the thermonuclear bomb. Adm. Hyman Rickover built the first nuclear submarine. All of them Jewish.
One of Oppenheimer’s assistants in developing the atom bomb was the young Richard Feynman, seen by many as the great scientific mind since Einstein. He’s known for the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics and the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as work in particle physics. Wow, I got tired and confused just writing that!
Jews played an important role on both sides of the Civil War. Eugenia Levy Phillips was a famous intelligence officer for the South. Judah Benjamin was commonly known as the “Brains of the Confederacy”, and served as the Secretary of State, Minister of War and Attorney-General of the Confederate States of America. On the other side, Frederick Knefler was a Union General and Earnestine Rose was a famous abolitionist.
Haym Solomon was one of the main financiers of the American Revolution. Joseph Simon supplied the fledgling U.S. Army with the famous Henry Rifles which were used to fight against the British.
But not all the Jewish fighting was done in uniform, some Jews were mobsters. You know what’s the greatest long-term legacy of those Jews? Las Vegas! Jewish mobster Bugsy Siegel, with the help of another Jewish criminal Meyer Lansky, turned Las Vegas into the casino capital of the world.
Most of the original Las Vegas hotel builders were Jewish. In recent years, Steve Wynn, whose father changed the name fom Weinberg to Wynn, built the first mega-casino Mirage, as well as many other casino-hotels, including the Belagio.
So whether it’s medicine or nuclear bombs, clothes or lipstick, Barbie or Ronald McDonald, ice cream or coffee, economic theory or gambling, and even if it’s Christmas songs, Jews have played a major role in the development of the American culture. Ours really is a Judeo-Christian culture.
