Gunmen open fire on car on main road to West Bank city of Hebron ahead of Middle East
Four Israelis were shot dead tonight near a Jewish settlement on the outskirts of the turbulent West Bank city of Hebron, on the eve of the first face-to-face talks between Israel and the Palestinians for more than 20 months.
Gunmen opened fire on a car on a main road close to Hebron, according to the Israeli military. Unconfirmed reports said that all the victims were from the same family, and included a pregnant woman.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility. A military spokeswoman said the army was at the scene, evacuating the bodies, and that soldiers were searching the area.
Hebron, a turbulent city in which a core of hardline ideological Jewish settlers are protected by hundreds of Israeli troops, has been the scene of numerous violent attacks from both sides of the conflict.
The attack will dent hopes that peace talks, due to start in Washington with a White House dinner tomorrow, can succeed in bringing a resolution to the conflict. (No kidding!
