ISRAEL: Then and Now

 THEN - June 5, 1967
"In the week beginning June 5, 1967, the world was startled by a
lightning war which threw the Middle East into a turmoil - the
Six Day War.
Six vital days which saw the birth of a new Middle East,
althered the map of this part of the world, alarmed the Great Powers,
humbled the Soviet Union and demonstrated the power of Israel.

Events succeeded each other with frightening speed -
troop movements towards Sinai involving a 100,000 men,
thousands of vehicles, hundreds of tanks and planes;
the closing of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping;
the signing of military pacts with Jordan and Iraq ....

Israel was taken by surprise, and for help and support
turned to the Great Powers and the international organizations -
but to no avail.
Yet David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of the
State of Israel, had stated repeatedly over the years
his belief that the country could rely only on her own strength.

International guarantees, the promises of heads of state
and the resolutions of the United Nations would
never insure the security and the survival of Israel.
The State had to be master of its fate.

SIX DAYS after the outbreak of this war,
Israel emerged from the battle
as a power in the Middle East. ......

ISRAEL'S victory had proven that she
could not be destroyed."

NOW - June 21, 2010

Storms are brewing and many an Israeli writer is sending up warning flares; talks about Israel being delegitimatized, Anti-Semitic hate crossing lines never imagined a few years ago, from throughout the West into Europe; a president of the United States refusing to lend an ear to the plight of Israel's security from a madman in Iran promising to "wipe Israel off the map"; U.S. congressmen pleading with the president to "support" Israel; the U.N and the U.S. rejecting Israel's right to defend her national security through blockades and requesting that an Investigation of Israel's actions be made after terrorist tried to run through Israel (and Egypt's) blockade to terrorist organization, Hamas; ....

and the list grows daily, all pointing to a world gone mad, preferring to side with dictators and terrorists and abandoning the one democracy in the Middle East, Israel.  If Bar-Zohar's biography of Israel's hero Ben-Gurion proves one thing, it is that one thing is needed in Israel today.

A "leader" - one like Ben-Gurion, who did not fear the world's opinion of the State of Israel; a man who did not compromised and bow to world dictators or hate-filled armies of the Arabs/Muslims; nor did he refuse to fight for the Land of Israel when realizing that the "Great Powers" of this world would not come to the aid of Israel against the MILLIONS of Arabs who wished to wipe Israel off the face of the map.  Had Ben-Gurion waited for the West to approve a defense of Israel, I would suggest that there would be no Israel today.

However, Israel standing today is proof that there was a "man for the hour" in 1967 - a leader who did not fear fighting against the world to protect Israel; a Lion of Israel who fought all the world's Goliath's.  And we read,

"Israel's victory proved that she could not be destroyed."

What has changed since then and now, dear Israel?  Why do your supporters read of concessions and appeasements and the giving up of land over and over again, for a false peace?  Do you tremble and become confused when small dictators roar about "wiping you off the map"?  Have you brought back reports to your president that there are too many giants in the land (world)?  Has your IDF become less than the days when Ben-Gurion were alive?  What is all this talk about storms, when history proves since the beginning that you are a "chosen" nation and since "chosen" why have you lost the courage to stand as in days of old, or even 42 years ago?

Prime Minister Netanyahu is quoted as saying "dark days are ahead".  That is very true, but not something that should cause the hearts of Israeli's to shudder, or freeze in fear - it should be the battle call to all Israel's young lions to stand tall, straight, and be ready for VICTORY - for Israel cannot be destroyed.

Shalom!
