'Palestinians will never accept that this is a Jewish state’

So when can he [the prime minister] wake up in the morning and think about Ofakim, Umm el-Fahm, Yeroham or Kiryat Shmona.

A big part of the budget also goes [to security]. At the end of the day the government decides and has to set priorities. A senior official in the defense establishment sat with me two weeks ago and talked about the impending battle with the Treasury. I said, “Why are you worried, prime ministers have always accepted your requests.” There was a decision a few months ago to move NIS 2 billion-NIS 5b. for swine flu, and NIS 1.5b. to security for something they couldn’t talk about. I voted against.

You can’t give a 1,000% answer to everything. Even when you take the car on the road, you might – God forbid – have a light accident. But just because of that, you don’t go onto the street in a tank. You have to weigh things. Of course, security is central. I certainly know that, but you have to use judgment and realize that there is also education, health, social welfare, the periphery – and those are things that are very significant in my view.
