Officials in Israel have said that Hamas in recent weeks has kept the rocket fire to a minimum for its own reasons.
Terrorists fired a Kassam rocket at southern Israel on Saturday night. The rocket, fired from northern Gaza, exploded in an area south of Ashkelon. No injuries or damage were reported.
Last month, it was reported that Hamas Gaza government head Khaled Masha'al had instructed the Hamas military wing, Izz-a-din al-Kassam, to halt its rocket fire against Israel, and to impose the same cease-fire on other Gaza terror groups. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the time used his influence to pressure Masha'al to ensure an end to the rocket fire.
Officials in Israel have said that Hamas has kept the rocket fire to a minimum in recent weeks for its own reasons, and that the terror group was not interested in aggravating the security situation in southern Israel at this time. There are other issues, including the exchange of kidnapped IDF solider Gilad Shalit for some 1,000 terrorists in Israeli prisons, as well as unifications talks with Fatah – the latter backed by Egypt, which is pressuring the two terror groups to resolve their differences – that are taking up Hamas' attention at this time.
