SEATTLE (YBH.ME) – The ever present “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” controversy has taken a new twist. On Thursday afternoon, during the middle of “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day”, Facebook removed the page from its website.
What was thought to be an act of self-censorship by Facebook, under the fear of retaliation from Muslims, may in fact have been the act of an individual moderator of the group “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day”. As of 7:00 am this morning the group’s page is back up on Facebook with the following statement:
The group’s page has over 108,000 members to date. Their stated mission is to spark “serious” debate. EDMD’s full statement from Facebook:

Back. This page was removed two days ago, after one of our moderators had his email and skype hacked. His personal data was revealed. He then got scared and deleted the …page, the blog and the emails. The rest of us, are now back without him after he backed out. This is another scare tactic from the Islamic extremists. We won’t fall. Pictures you were unable to post on the 20th? Check the forums for interviews.

TO CLARIFY: This is not a COMPETITION. We all win or we all lose. Sites and newspapers around the world are quoting us as having a competition, well, we’re not. This is a joint effort.
We also encourage you to make a creative and funny depiction of mohammed. There is no need to make hateful and totally respectless depiction of him. Remember that we also, sad, but true: hurt the feelings of the moderate muslims as well.
Hopefully this page will spark serious debates in international forums.
We are not trying to slander the average muslim , it’s not a muslim/islam hatepage. We simply want to show the extremists that threaten to harm people because of their Mohammed depictions, that we’re not afraid of them. That they can’t take away our right to freedom of speech by trying to scare us to silence.
We encourage you to report all hateful things that get expressed through words & images on this page.
Western media has been in a de facto war with the radical elements of Islam over censorship since the tragic events of 9/11. The latest round began when Comedy Central caved to pressure from Islamic groups and refused to show an image of Mohammad on an episode of “South Park” which led cartoonist Molly Norris to lampoon the whole affair. Ms. Norris’ cartoon inadvertently led to the “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” group being formed on Facebook. The government of Pakistan has banned the website in the Asian country over the flap.
