Moshe Ben-Ivgi, who murdered taxi driver Derek Roth and fled Israel in 2004, was detained in western Argentina along with another Israeli.
Ben-Ivgi, who fled Israel while on vacation from prison using a forged passport, was detained after arousing the suspicions of a local police officer.
The policeman asked Ben-Ivgi for his personal details and arrested him after the escaped killer refused to identify himself. Realizing Ben-Ivgi was Israeli, Argentinean police forwarded his photograph to the Israel Police representative in South America and later also provided a fingerprint.
Ben-Ivgi's identity was confirmed, and Justice Ministry officials say the extradition process will continue from the point it stopped at last time.
Ben-Ivgi disappeared about a year ago, after he avoided the final stages of the extradition process undertaken against him.
Ben-Ivgi was sentenced at the age of 14, with judges sending him to 16 years in prison for murdering taxi driver Derek Roth in 1994 along with friend Arbel Aloni.
The two killers' version for the evens of that night was never published, and the motive for the crime remains unclear to this day, as does the identity of the one who pulled the trigger. The two murderers were later sentenced to five more years in prison for two robberies they committed while on break from jail.
