Obama: Reporters could never be farmers

"You have to love some of the pundits in Washington," he said. You do?

The president of America today mocked the Washington press corps for a woefully short attention span. They scrutinize polls, declare the nation still divided over health care -- and it's only been a week since the bill was signed! They haven't even given it a chance to work yet!

"Can you imagine if some of these reporters were working on a farm?" Obama asked. "You planted some seeds, and they came out the next day, and they looked, and nothing’s happened! (Laughter and applause.) There’s no crop! We’re going to starve! Oh, no! (Applause.) It’s a disaster! (Laughter.)"

Except that we've been talking about health care reform for over a year now, but never mind. Obama tried to have it both ways, saying none of the bad things Republicans predicted came to pass from winning reform.

John Boehner "called this passage of this bill 'Armageddon,'" Obama said. "You had others who said this is the end of freedom as we know it."

He added, "So after I signed the bill, I looked around. I looked up at the sky to see if asteroids were coming. I looked at the ground to see if cracks had opened up in the earth. You know what, it turned out it was a pretty nice day. Birds were still chirping. Folks were strolling down the street. Nobody had lost their doctor. Nobody had pulled the plug on Granny. Nobody was being dragged away to be forced into some government-run health care plan."

But wait -- hasn't it only been a week? Most of the provisions in the bill haven't even taken effect yet. They can still pull the plug on Granny!

Say it ain't so! Beltway is not agriculturally inclined. (ap photos)
