During the lead up to his election victory, he surrounded himself with a host of vehemently anti-Israel advisors including Lee Hamilton, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Samantha Power, Susan Rice and Gen Jones, many of whom advocated imposing a solution on Israel..
He also made common cause with Jewish leftists represented by J Street and Israel Policy Forum who were urging him to increase the pressure on Israel and if that didn’t work, to impose a solution on Israel.

So it was no surprise that he started his term of office by attacking Israel, America’s best and most steadfast ally, declaring that all settlements were illegal and demanding a complete settlement construction freeze east of the greenline including in Jerusalem. He went so far as to repudiate the US commitment set out in the Bush letter ’04 to Sharon, declaring there was no agreement. Elliot Abrams and others involved in the negotiations which led to the letter, testified otherwise.
This letter also affirmed that “as part of a final peace settlement, Israel must have secure and recognized borders, which should emerge from negotiations between the parties in accordance with UNSC Resolutions 242 and 338.” Pres Bush had always supported a negotiated settlement and this letter did likewise. Noticeably absent was any reference to the Saudi Plan. The letter also contained a commitment, that “the United States will do its utmost to prevent any attempt by anyone to impose any other plan”.
By repudiating this letter as a U.S. commitment, Pres Obama opened the way for a settlement to be imposed according to the Saudi Plan rather than Res 242.
He set a goal of achieving an agreement in two years. One year is up, what has he accomplished? At first blush, it would appear, not much. But the reality is otherwise.
He got PM Netanyahu to agree to a two-state solution for the first time and to the terms of reference for negotiations, namely, “an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements.” These terms leave very little wiggle room so it does not matter that Pres Obama agreed with PM Netanyahu’s demand that there be no pre-conditions or that negotiations not start where Ehud Olmert left off.
Noticeably absent from the terms of reference were Jerusalem and refugees, two items that could scuttle talks and probably will. Pres Obama is on record of wanting Jerusalem divided and not favoring the return of refugees to Israel
He also got Netanyahu to agree to a temporary constructions freeze, not near what he was demanding, but enough to enable him to get Abbas to agree to the proximity talks.
Since attaining these building blocks, Pres Obama’s has witnessed falling approval ratings and increasing pressure to focus on domestic issues. How will this affect the progress made?
The Arab League has given its support to “proximity talks” but only for four months. This has enabled Abbas to likewise agree. The talks therefore will start soon and end before the temporary freeze ends. But no one expects an agreement to be reached.
The U.S. managed to accomplish this by sending a document to the Palestinians responding to their enquires which provided, “We expect both parties to act seriously and in good faith. If one side, in our judgment, is not living up to our expectations, we will make our concerns clear and we will act accordingly to overcome that obstacle,”
The document also committed the US to “sharing messages between the parties and offering our own ideas and bridging proposals.” and reiterated “Our core remains a viable, independent and sovereign Palestinian State with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967,”
This commitment by the U.S. was a determining factor in the Palestinians’ and the Arab League’s decision to agree to the U.S. proposal on indirect talks.
Both the agreed terms of reference above quoted and this document imply that Israel must return all occupied territories rather than some occupied territories as was the original intention of Res 242.
One wonders why PM Netanyahu would enter fruitless negotiations that would result in Israel being blamed and ultimately dictated to. In doing so, PM Netanyahu abandoned Israel’s previous demands for direct negotiations thereby allowing the Arab League to have a say. For that matter, Abbas also abandoned a long held position that only the PA can negotiate on behalf of the Palestinians.
The Arab League has thus given Obama four months only to achieve an agreement, failing which it will take over of the process. Pres Obama is only too happy to pass the buck.
When the Arab League announced their support, their Secretary General said;
“We intend in four months time to bring back the whole of the peace process to the Security Council thus ending the role of honest broker role played so far by the US and to put an end to the peace process.
“We will put the results of the talks before the Security Council and then ask this important body in charge of maintaining peace and security to decide on the steps forward.“
This in effect would abrogate the Oslo Accords and the Roadmap which heretofore have been considered binding.
Pursuant to Article 33, of the United Nations Charter, members, Israel included, who are “parties to any dispute, the continuance of which is likely to endanger the maintenance of international peace and security, shall, first of all, seek a solution by negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their own choice” and the Security Council “shall, when it deems necessary, call upon the parties to settle their dispute by such means.”

Israel could well be ordered to submit to arbitration or judicial settlement. Perhaps this is the reason PM Netanyahu keeps reaffirming Israel’s desire to negotiate.
The Security Council has the “primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security”. In fact, Article 37 provides, “If the Security Council deems that the continuance of the dispute is in fact likely to endanger the maintenance of international peace and security, it shall decide whether to take action under Article 36 or to recommend such terms of settlement as it may consider appropriate.” Chapter VII gives the Security Council the right to enforce these recommendations.
You can be sure that the Arab League is well aware of these provisions. It is highly doubtful that the US will veto any such move.
The EU is already on board. European Union foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, told a British audience in London on Saturday,
“After a fixed deadline, a UN Security Council resolution should proclaim the adoption of the two-state solution,”
“It would accept the Palestinian state as a full member of the UN, and set a calendar for implementation. It would mandate the resolution of other remaining territorial disputes and legitimize the end of claims.”
“If the parties are not able to stick to it [referring to the UN-imposed timetable -ed.], then a solution backed by the international community should be put on the table.”
Solana added that the UN-imposed “two-state solution” should include resolution of issues such as control over Israel’s capital, the city of Jerusalem, as well as border definitions, security arrangements and the “right of return” by millions of foreign descendants of Arab refugees who abandoned their homes during the 1948 war..
Netanyahu will thus be faced with making the best deal he can for fear of a worse deal being imposed. He can also decide to reject the authority of the United Nations resulting in Israel’s expulsion and the imposition of serious sanctions.
Speaking of serious sanctions, it appears unlikely they will be imposed on Iran. Israel’s only option then is the military one the sooner the better.
Pres Obama may well decide to posture as Israel’s defender and save her from the worst thereby improving his reelection chances without jeopardizing the imposed solution. For him, a win-win all around, that is, if Israel doesn’t reject it.

As the process goes forward Obama will posture himself as though he cares for all parties. At the same time his policies will be sugar frosted anti-Israel flakes. If, however, Israel were to attack Iran’s nuke facilities, Obama will see it as a dilemma. He will, at the same time, show sympathy for the ‘innocent’ parties in both countries, but detach himself by standing firmly with neither country while condemning the actions of both. Afterward, when you analyze his speeches, you will find he stands for everybody and nobody. For every sentence he speaks he has an opposite somewhere to effectively negate it if need be.

Who is the final arbiter and determinate of what comprises the oft used canard secure and recognized borders?
I think logically only Israel can determine what comprises secure borders and who gives a flying crap about who recognizes them? Realistically there are no real safe and secure borders in our area but there should be a given that we should always hold a maximalist position which is in reality a minimalist position in terms of ameliorating any existential threats. a mile here or there is bull shit we need Lebensraum .
Not Peace but lebensraum should always be our main goal and operational vision. Peace through strength is the only true way of achieving real Peace and then I’m not sure if it is really possible.

Excellent article and good set of posts on site.
In the land of the blind a one eyed man is king. Thus any comparision between Bush and Obama, or more accurately all US presidential predecessors and Obama.
That was a comment on Jihadwatch a couple of weeks ago which I stored and which is apt because the big question which Jihadwatch never quite answers is why the alliance between our tops and Islam.
Where I disagree in general with you Ted and most Jewish patriots is on the following issue.
I believe that what drives these issues forward is the deep, historical and “terminal” crisis in capitalism. This can sound like a cliche but some simple truths have to be repeated so I have to risk that.
Jews as they stand are not revolutionary or even progressive, but they are objectively revolutionary. That means that I consider their leadership in general as “basura” but they must as a people become revolutionary or perish.
So Ted and dear friends on Israpoundit. Why do I locate these issues in the crisis.
Because the crisis is driving the American and European ruling capitalist class, or some call it elites, in to an alliance with Nazi Fascist Islam and they have both by strategic means got the “left” on their side, that is the “Left” are traitors to the socialist revolutionary cause WHICH I DO REPRESENT WITHOUT QUESTION.
Consider this crisis and consider Obama. This guy is really the President of the Crisis, patently obvious I would have thought.
Hence as Jared pioneered on his great site the US and EU ruling elites are strategically stirring up antisem itism, so the visit of Biden to Israel is designed to do just that. Biden being no more than a rep of the ISM.
Is the present crisis as bad as 1929, surely a strategic question which we must address? It is arguably worse because capitalism as a system is older by 80 years and the boom post war has been so much more extensive than anything post Versailles.
Consider Iceland, as just one example of this crisis, I tell you friends that there are huge, huge struggles ahead and for Jews to fight correctly they must be aware of these things, just as much as being aware of the content of Mein kamph in the 20s.
Ayn Reagan is correct. Much of this can be distilled down to the Iranian Nuclear Plan which is the equivalent of the Hitlerite solution which ended in the Holocaust.
But we do have time, a little. But only if we engage most seriously in discussion.
I do applaud Yamit in quoting this
Yamit I do not know many Jews apart from my site and here, but one of those I know has stated that the rabbi in Marbella and the Iman there are on very friendly terms. This Jewish man is most prominent, especially here there and everywhere working for “charity”, but whenever I challenge him on his radio station he explodes into rage, he uses the most abusive language against me, he says that “I am not even a Jew”, and his constant line is that Islam is a religion of peace just there are some extremists, and although I make clear how much I defend Israel against Hamas he considers me an extremist and uses every stratagem to poison people against me, and of course I rarely engage him on his radio station because he controls his radion station and thus that ground.
Against this man and in support of you and the words above of Ben Gurion I believe that the fight has got to be taken up against these Jewish leaders, who are everywhere, and are so respectful, so much part of the US and EU establishment.
That is my only diference with Ted. I would urge Ted to be attacking these Jewish leaders day in and day out because they are the key. They are the “Kapos” and will be the “Kapos”
Total hostility and irreconcilability to these kinds of Jewish leaders.
There is lots of hope because the objective situation drives the US elite (Not the ordinary people) in to alliance with Islam. And Uzi Landau who I heard this morning expresses this Jewish patriotic tendency that Jerusalem is the city of the Jews, throwing this back in the pro Kosovo face of Biden, and into the reactionary smiling flashing dentals of that snake (Sorry not snake that is very wrong, snakes are majestic creatures I withdraw that simile)

Biden: Jews don’t deserve a viable state
During a press conference in Ramallah, Biden reiterated American support for a “viable, contiguous Palestinian state”. Automatically, that means that the Jewish state is cut in half by the West Bank – Gaza corridor and left without its capital and the holiest places.
As usual, Biden called on Israel to take “bold steps” toward peace – that is, offer still more staggering concessions to our sworn enemies.

Europe: Jews out of Palestine.
The European Parliament endorsed Goldstone report and demanded that Israel implements its findings.
Having cleansed their continent of Jews, Europeans now help the Middle East.
The parliament was sharply divided between right and left. Practically all conservatives opposed the resolution.
Regrettably, Israeli government cannot bring itself to establish special relations with European ultra-right groups, preferring to rely instead on the traditional leftist partners who embraced by now the Palestinian side.

According to a major new poll by Public Opinion Strategies and Greenberg
Quinlan Rosner Research commissioned by The Israel Project:
80 percent agree that now is the time to toughen sanctions to compel Iran to
stop developing nuclear weapons;
More Americans than ever believe the U.S. should take Israel’s side in the
conflict;
Fully 76 percent of U.S. likely voters consider Israel a vital ally of the
U.S.;
Fully 89 percent believe Palestinian leaders must end the culture of hate
that encourages children to become suicide bombers;

(TIP) shows the percent of Americans who believe the U.S. should take Israel’s
side in the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is at an all
time high: 71 percent in contrast to 8 percent who believe the U.S. should
side with the Palestinians.
“The militant actions by Hamas and disarray among the Palestinians have
moved Americans to side with Israel even more strongly than in the past,”
concluded Stanley Greenberg, Ph.D., of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research.
Among U.S. likely voters, 60 percent support Israel, while support for the
Palestinians has fallen to 8 percent. Majorities voting for McCain (85
percent), Obama (62 percent) and Clinton (58 percent) all support America
standing with Israel in the conflict. Additionally, 76 percent of U.S.
likely voters consider Israel a vital ally of the United States, and more
than two-thirds think U.S. foreign aid to Israel is a good investment.
NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS POLL RESULTS? SEEMS SO POSITIVE UNTIL ONE REALIZES IT’S MEANINGLESS BECAUSE IT’S FOUNDATION IS BASED ON 2 STATES AND THAT MEANS ISRAEL WILL BE COMMITTING SUICIDE!
Americans see the Israeli government as committed to peace in the Middle
East. In contrast, significant majorities do not believe the same about the
commitment levels of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. While 66 percent
of Americans believe the Israeli government is committed to reaching a peace
agreement with the Palestinians, 61 percent believe the Palestinian
Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank, is not committed
to reaching a peace agreement with Israel. Similarly, 70 percent believe
that the Hamas-led Palestinian leadership in Gaza is not committed to
reaching such an agreement
According to 89 percent of Americans, Palestinian leaders must end the
culture of hate that encourages children to become suicide bombers. In
contrast, a strong majority of Americans believes Israel respects freedoms
of religion, speech and press, as well as the rights of women and
minorities.
Americans think the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is more
about religion and ideology (69 percent) than land (24 percent). To reach a
two-state solution, 70 percent agree Israel should be allowed to trade land
with the Palestinians to avoid forcing tens of thousands of Jewish citizens
to move from the West Bank. A plurality disagrees that Israel must give up
its West Bank settlements and divide Jerusalem for there to be peace.
Fully 84 percent of Americans agree Israel should remain a Jewish state and
a homeland for the Jewish people. Nearly two-thirds believe that Jerusalem
should stay entirely under Israel’s control because Israel ensures that all
the Christian, Muslim and Jewish holy sites remain open and safe for all
faiths. Only 20 percent believe that Jerusalem should be divided.
“It is interesting to note that only slightly more than half of likely
voters have contact with any Jewish person,” commented Jennifer Laszlo
Mizrahi, founder and president of The Israel Project. “Even among those who
do know someone Jewish, only 18 percent have heard anything about Israel
from Jews in the past year. This shows once again that American support for
Israel is based not on Jewish influence, but rather on core shared values
between the two countries. There is clear and strong support for Israel
among all faiths in America.”
Only 14 percent of Americans blame Israeli leaders for the current
humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while 64 percent blame Hamas leaders who
control Gaza. A vast majority of 90 percent of Americans agree that, just as
the US would defend itself against daily rocket fire, Israel must defend
itself and take action to end terror attacks against its civilian
population. Nearly three-quarters think Hamas purposely puts the Palestinian
civilian population in harm’s way by using them as human shields.
Consequently, 64 percent think Israel cannot be blamed for Palestinian
casualties when it attacks terrorists.
Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies observed that, “Despite the
efforts of the Palestinian leaders to pin the blame on Israel for Gaza’s
crisis, Americans blame Hamas by an overwhelming margin.”
Additionally, 45 percent believe that until Hamas stops shooting rockets at
Israel and recognizes its right to exist, Israel has no obligation to
continue to provide Gaza with basic goods and services and Gaza should be
forced to get all of its electricity from another country. Nonetheless,
Israel still provides significant humanitarian support to Gaza on a regular
basis.[1]
Said Mizrahi, “Americans clearly understand that Israel is a democracy
facing tremendous security risks. More than 4,000 rockets have been fired
from Hamas-controlled Gaza into Israel since Israel left all of Gaza in
2005. Americans recognize and understand the actions that Israel must take
to defend its citizens.”
Support for Israel’s security fence remains strong at 62 percent, and 77
percent of Americans believe Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank are
justified to protect Israeli citizens from terrorism. By almost two-to-one
(60 to 32 percent), Americans believe Israel should use force to re-occupy
Gaza if nothing else works to stop the missile attacks.
Mizrahi added, “The threat of terrorism coming from Gaza is all the more

A full 70 percent of likely American voters support expanding United Nations
economic and diplomatic sanctions against Iran. Additionally, 80 percent
agree that now is the time to toughen the sanctions to compel Iran to stop
developing nuclear weapons. Most Americans believe the threat posed by Iran
stretches beyond Israel, reaching much closer to home: nearly two-thirds of
Americans say they would feel less safe if Iran successfully developed a
nuclear weapon.
The poll of 800 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted by telephone March 18-20,
2008 for The Israel Project by Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies
and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. The margin of error
is +/- 3.5 percent.

President Obama will not dictate terms to Israel or anybody else. He is losing control of his office. Within eight months he will have a hostile congress and no legislative accomplishments for his first two years in office. The American people have figured him out. He will be isolated for the remainder of his term and then consigned to history.
The Arabs and the UN can posture all they want. If they abrogate Oslo, Israel will annex areas B and C along with Jerusalem and the Golan. Israel will never divide in half to afford the Arabs a contiguous state. The idea is itself a joke. What can the UN do, invade Israel? Even if there is no US veto any such action would result in a disaster for the invading force.
There are lots of Jew haters in America, many in the present administration. There is also tremendous grass roots support for Israel in the US. Nothing will come of threats. Jews don’t accept threats any more. Netanyahu needs to grasp that a bit more firmly.

Dr. Biden:
In the morning, Dr. Jill Biden will visit teachers and children at the
integrated Peace Pre-school program at the Jerusalem International YMCA.
This visit will be POOLED PRESS.
In the afternoon, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will visit the national
grave sites of Yitzhak Rabin and Theodor Herzl and lay a wreath. Afterwards,
they will visit Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum and memorial. Both of
these events will be POOLED PRESS.
In the evening, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will have dinner with the
Prime Minister and Mrs. Netanyahu. There will be a pool spray at the top of
this dinner.

In the morning, Dr. Biden will travel to Augusta Victoria Hospital, where
she will visit with doctors, nurses and patients and take a tour of the

cancer outreach program and will visit the radiotherapy unit. She will also
visit with children and parents in the pediatric cancer care and kidney care
units. This visit will be POOLED PRESS.
In the afternoon, Dr. Biden will visit the Al Kamandjati Music Center in
Ramallah where she will meet with teachers and students, and listen to a
student music performance. Al Kamandjati provides music lessons, workshops
and music programs including concerts for Palestinian children, particularly
those living in refugee camps and in marginalized villages in the West Bank,
Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.
