How Obama Is Turning America against Israel

March 19, 2010

By Ed Lasky

At best, Barack Obama committed the latest big mistake in his conduct of foreign policy last week. At worst, the president carried out a deliberate operation intended to weaken the U.S.-Israel relationship and turn the public against the Jewish State.

An announcement was made by a ministry of the Israeli government during Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Israel that building permits were to be issued for a neighborhood in Jerusalem. The area concerned was expressly excluded from the moratorium on building that Prime Minster Netanyahu had offered to encourage the Palestinians to come to peace talks. The area is already filled with Israelis, and it was always considered an area that Israel would keep in any peace deal with the Palestinians. Indeed, the Palestinians never pushed to include this area in any previous dealings. The area is strategically important for the Israelis, being located on a higher elevation ideal for snipers to kill Israelis traveling on key highways.

Nevertheless, the announcement during Biden's visit was a diplomatic faux pas. Joe Biden made his displeasure clear while there, standing up Netanyahu for dinner (he was late by ninety minutes) and verbally lashing out.

Netanyahu and the Israeli government apologized profusely. That was not enough. When Biden returned home, the president (Mr. Cool) was "livid" and met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to work out word by word what the American response would be.

The building plans were "condemned" by the State Department -- a word that is rarely employed (especially by this administration) and usually used to criticize mass murder. Compare and contrast this "condemnation" with the somnolent response to the mullahs' murders of Iranian protesters. That is just one glaring inconsistency.

Sec. Clinton -- at the direction of Barack Obama -- blamed Israel for insulting America, weighed Israel down with additional demands, tied American national security to the Israel-Palestinian peace effort, and stretched what should have been an unfortunate incident to a dressing-down of Israel that can be fairly described as unbalanced and surreal. A bureaucratic mistake became an "insult to America." This was the phrase used by Hillary Clinton and was deliberately chosen by the president and our nation's chief diplomat (this is the president, by the way, who famously declared that "words matter").

One would have thought that Obama would be too busy dealing with his signature issue, health care reform, to take time out to draft a reply to the Israelis. The fact that he would make this rebuke a priority reveals something disquieting about his sense of balance -- as does a comparison of how he responds to provocations and actual insults from our adversaries.

Obama's vaunted equanimity and judgment are not on display when it comes to the Israelis. Hugo Chávez, Syria's Basher Assad, the Chinese, and Iran's Ahmadinejad constantly humiliate America, and the administration does not make a peep. Instead, Obama reserves his ire for an ally. The minor public relations gaffe was a pretext that gave the Obama team an opening to criticize Israel again, and in very disturbing ways.

But that was not enough. Barack Obama sent out Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod to spread the word on the airwaves that this dispute was somehow a threat to American servicemen -- an absurd proposition at best, but one that would serve to inflame feelings against Israel. Remember: The administration had already heard an abject apology from Netanyahu and had a period of time to reflect and accept the outreached hand. Instead, gratuitous slaps followed.

This happened just months after both the Israelis and Americans pledged to keep their disagreements private. The Israelis kept their end of the bargain. The Obama administration broke its pledge -- not the first time they have done so with the Israelis. Friendships are built on trust, as are true and effective peace agreements. These are principles to which Barack Obama apparently does not subscribe.

This minor gaffe on the part of Israelis has been used by the Obama administration to lambast Israel before the American people, and in effect blame it for endangering our soldiers and marines.

What of the Palestinians? They have been engaged in an orgy of anti-Semitism (fueled by American taxpayer money sent as aid): honoring terrorists who murdered Israeli children and petulantly refusing to engage in peace talks with the Israelis because by his own admission, Mahmoud Abbas expects Israel to be delivered to him on a silver platter. Not a whit has been said about Palestinian intransigence by this administration.

Clearly, the double standards that are at work cast doubt not only on Barack Obama's competency, but also his judgment and equipoise. He ignores true insults to America, such as Syria's invitation to Ahmadinejad and Hezbollah right after America announced that we were returning our Ambassador to Syria. His apathy towards Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons is also notable.

Does Barack Obama have a hair trigger only when it comes to Israelis?

The president's words and actions have perpetuated and promoted the victimology mentality that is so pervasive in the Muslim world, and that has been a curse not just for the Israelis, but also for the Palestinians themselves. In this worldview, the Palestinians can do no wrong, and the Israelis -- who under Netanyahu have announced that they will accept a two-state solution, who have offered peace talks with no conditions to deal with all final status issues -- can do no right. We saw this view of history on full display in the fractured history that Barack Obama presented to the Muslim world in Cairo (where fiction and propaganda were transformed into history).

What is the result of Obama adopting the Arab narrative of victimology and broadcasting it to the entire world?

Americans are not supporting Israel as much as they have in the past. As Helen Thomas would say, "thank you, Mr. President." Via Commentary:

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of voters now say Israel is an ally of the United States, while two percent (2%) view the Jewish state as an enemy. For 32%, the country is somewhere in between the two. In a separate survey in August of last year, 70% of Americans rated Israel as a U.S. ally.

James Kirchick, a liberal writer, noticed way back in July of last year that "Obama was treating our friend like a fiend and turning public opinion against an ally." Kirchcik continued:

... those who harbored suspicions about Obama's approach to the Middle East had good reason to be worried. A confluence of factors -- including his administration's undue pressure on Israel, a conciliatory approach to authoritarian Muslim regimes, and the baseless linkage of the failed "peace process" to the curtailment of the Iranian nuclear program -- point to what could become "the greatest disagreement between the two countries in the history of their relationship," as Middle East expert Robert Satloff recently told Newsweek.

This dramatic shift in American policy began several months ago when the administration signaled that it would make the cessation of Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank the centerpiece of its policy to revamp the region. And that approach, mostly hinted at through anonymous leaks, became as good as official when Obama delivered his vaunted address to the Muslim world in Cairo earlier this month. In that speech, Israel (and, specifically, its policy of settlement construction) was the only state to merit specific criticism from the president of the United States. Among all the degradations and injustices in the Middle East, from the abhorrent treatment of women in nations like Saudi Arabia, to Syrian-backed assassinations of pro-sovereignty politicians in Lebanon, to the arrest and imprisonment of gay men in Egypt, the leader of the free world singled out America's one, reliable democratic ally in the region for rebuke.
This latest contretemps, in other words, is not a one-off event. There is a pattern that may very well reveal a strategy of turning American public opinion against Israel. Eventually, accumulated criticisms can accomplish just such a thing.

Even an appointee of Bill Clinton's to the United Nations has taken exception to this administration's policies towards our ally.

F.F. Robbins, who served in the United Nations under Bill Clinton, sees damage from the salvos launched from the Oval Office. The Boston Globe also sees this recent behavior as intended to undermine the US-Israel relationship:
Still the Obama administration has opted to turn these events into something that borders on ugly. Knowing full well that the Israeli governmental coalition is a complicated affair that the prime minister has worked hard to carry with him in order that Palestinian demands can be met, and knowing that Netanyahu had already apologized for the announcement, the Obama administration deliberately took a course that it knew would inflame anti-Israeli intransigence throughout the Arab world, and would undermine support for Israel in the United States.
Elliott Abrams told the Council on Foreign Relations,

It appears the United States and Israel are divided over all this now because the Obama administration is imposing new demands on Israel, and building tensions in the bilateral relationship, in an effort to destabilize the governing coalition in Israel. It is a shameful way to treat an ally.

Is this president deliberately trying to turn the American people against Israel? There has always been a bedrock of public support for Israel in America, especially when compared to American feelings towards Palestinians. But public opinion fluctuates and can be fickle. Changes can emerge on the margin -- cracks can spread, and bedrock can erode, too -- especially when it is under continual assault by our leaders.

This process of erosion may occur incrementally, but the end result is the same. Is this the type of climate change the Obama administration desires?

I've wondered how long the American public would continue to support Israel once they notice that American Jews don't support Israel.

There are reasons why conservatives should continue to support Israel (as the closest facsimile to a free market democracy in a Middle East zone desperately in need of them) but it's pretty de-motivating to be shouted down in political discussions by liberal Jews whose leftist bona fides are obviously more important to them than any loyalty to Israeli Jews living in the shadow of a looming nuclear holocaust. Go figure.

So now an antisemitic muslimophilic POTUS is added to the unappealing mix that is Mid East politics and surprise! has pressed his thumb heavily on the Pali side of the scale. (Anyone who doubts he's antisemitic must not know about his 20 years of Sundays attending his mentor and father figure Rev. Wrights church of "blacks hating Jews, whitey and America").

By the way, what do you call a diaspora Jew who expresses solidarity with the Palestinians and excoriates Israel in language that would be called antisemitic in anyone non-Jewish? He's not self-hating, as he thinks he's a very fine fellow indeed.

The Obama Administration is the personification of Liberal Socialism. As such, Liberals, while pretending to love all minorities, including Jews, actually despise Jews! Even back in the Roosevelt days prior to World War II, Liberals despised Jews! Henry Ford, certainly no right-wing zealot, wrote a book that Hitler so enjoyed, he gave old Henry the Golden (Nazi) Eagle award. Today, the Ford Foundation is supports every Liberal, anti-American cause extant! The Ford Foundation continues to support causes and movements that would destroy Israel and murder every Jew possible! Accordingly, so does the Liberal Socialist movement in our country.

Obama hates Israel and hates Jews. It's as simple as that. Why so many American Jews are so enamoured with Barak Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm)? It's beyond comprehension! Yet American Jews continue to set store by the SOB and will vote for him blindly in 2012.

Obama is probably miffed, that he is unable at this time, to openly embrace Castro as he has Hamas. The real coming out party will begin, once the Liberal Socialists take over American Health Care and see about it's destruction. That's coming soon.

Is any one really surprised? He is a member of the cult of Islam. I've always suspected that's the reason he won't show his long form birth certificate or school records-they probably Identify his religion as a Muslim. Read the Koran, it's hard to consider it a religious document unless you worship an evil god (Satan?).

Ed Lasky, I don't know why any of this surprises you. It's pretty clear where Obama stands concerning the Israelis. The Israelis know it, you know it, and I know it. Obama coddles our former enemies and abuses our former allies, and he has ideological reasons for doing so. Those ideological reasons are blatantly apparent. The trick with Obama and his leftist cohorts is to ignore whatever they say while paying close attention to what they do. Their actions are entirely consistent and predictable.

This incedent is not about Isreal or American Jews. I believe it is about us. We The People. What have we done with God's blessings in the last 63 years? We have let our government tell us that we don't need and we can't live with the God of our forefathers. We have allowed the secularist and the humanist define us to our God.

God warned the Isrealites before they took the land of Cannan to be careful to obey God or He would remove them from their land. There is a parallel, I see, with what happened to Israel and what is happening in the U.S.A.. We have told our God that we built this land and we are responsible for our wealth and we can take care of ourselves. We have removed God from our schools and our science. We have removed God from our families. All our prayers are for traditions sake and will be removed in time. We have claimed that we are seperated from our God in all things and that we have new gods that we now kow tow to. The Obama and his Lucifarians are hell bent on keeping Bible prophesy infallable. They don't even know that what they are doing is actually what God said would happen to this country if we were to fail to pass on to our children the blessings that we have recieved.

Telling Isreal to 'take a leap' and to throw them to their enemies is about as close as it gets to begging God to prove He is the 'I AM'. We are being tested and our future is in our resolve to tear down the false altars that have been built in our name. Vote these Lucifarians out. Return our nation's motto back from jingoism.

America is beginning to understand that Barrack Obama was never a neophyte. Rather, he is calculated and insidious. He is bent on destroying every foundation upon which this nation was constructed. This applies to his foreign policy. Israel is in the way of "Muslim love," and Obama is doing everything possible to remove Israel as a roadblock. I understand many will roll their eyes, but this is exactly what is portrayed in Biblical prophecy. Sooner or later, America (at least its government) will turn against Israel. At that point, all hell will break loose.

That is God speaking to Abram, (Abraham) when he called him to go to Canaan and GAVE HIM AND HIS PEOPLE THE LAND!!!! Take that Mr. Obama.

This.......this........I can't think of a name that AT would allow (the Marxist communist who's occupying the Office of the President). I now fully understand Bush Derangement Syndrome. Except, I think that was more of a phobia - an "unreasonable fear". This (the Marxist communist who's occupying the Office of the President) presents a real threat. Not just to us citizens, but to the American way of life and to America, the country; our sovereignty, our position of leadership in the world, and to the hope that America has held for all the people of the world.

To the Jews who voted for this (Marxist communist who's occupying the Office of the President), I hope you can overcome your pride, your ego, your "intellectualism" (elitism), and admit that this (Marxist communist who's occupying the Office of the President) does not have your best interests at heart. The Jewish people can expect to hold the same place in his brand of "utopian" society that they held in Stalin's "utopia".

Electing this (Marxist communist who's occupying the Office of the President) has been like handing the keys of your 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C to your 16 year-old son who's had his learner's permit for 2 days and who's favorite 2 movies are Bullitt and The French Connection. Given that, he hasn't done anything that should surprise us. Anyone who paid any attention at all to his speeches during his campaign would have heard him tell us that he was a radical Marxist socialist.

Hopefully, this sad and shameful episode in American history will be the impetus to the revitalization of American greatness and the maiming and crippling (if not the total destruction) of progressivism.

I'm perplexed. Given the fact that the Obama administration is comprised of not a few Jewish people--one of whom, Rahm Emanuel, holds dual U.S./Israeli citizenship and fought in the Israeli army--how could there be a "turning against Israel?" Do we need to go down the list of administration cabinet/advisors/czars: Axelrod, the aforementioned Emanuel, Sunstein, Geithner, Plouffe, Feldstein, Summers, etc.? I'm aware of the delicacy one must employ when asking such questions. Nevertheless, I do not see how the makeup of the Obama crew comports with the alleged anti-Israel scenario. Add to this the apparent ineptitude of Obama and the rumors that Axelrod and Emanuel actually write the scripts that the tele-reader delivers, even more doubt is cast on the supposed enmity existing between the administration and Israel.

These two posts say it all. As a Christian I consider I am to live peacefully with all, (as I can) and Israel is to be blessed, but also, as children of God through Jesus Christ I also have the promises of Abraham--those who bless me will be blessed those who curse me will be to themselves a curse. Our president has agreed to the cursing, by his pastor of our entire nation, many of whom are Christians. What multiple of agony is he piling on his own head? In addition he treats Israel like a dog, kicking at them, while he praises their oppressors.

I don't believe God will be mocked...in the end. Men will have their posturing, but it will end on God's terms. He is not slow, He is right on time! Every time.

We need to continue to be active, informed and connected.

Well I notice that the Obamanation canceled the deep penetration bombs that Israel had ordered and redirected them to storage at Diego Garcia. The problem with that is if Iran gets the bomb and the "destroy Israel faction is in power" will the hard liners in Israel just wait for the nukes to fall on them? They may not have the deep penetrators but they do have something else to dig out an underground facility. Nuclear bombs of their own. Probably Thermo Nuclear at that.

As the husband of a Jewish woman who lives in a community with a large Jewish population it has been my observation that the majority of American Jewry is liberal. While they claim to support Israel as an abstract concept, they would see her destroyed if it came down to a vote between her survival and abortion rights. It is incomprehensible that there is little recognition of the existential struggle that Israel faces, particularly when many of my neighbors great grandparents and grandparents faced anti-antisemitism first hand. Sometimes it appears similar to the refusal of European Jewry to see the storm brewing in Nazi Germany.

Don't be! The people you mention are secular Jews with a leftist bent. Israel has its politics too; five major parties, Kadima, Likud, Israel Beytenu, Labor and Shas make up the 120 seats of a unicameral system. It is very hard to govern without these parties making deals with each other to make a majority able to govern. We should thank G-D our founders were bright enough to create a more unique system of governance, based on written principles of our Constitution. Most of the leftists in this country would prefer to have parliamentarian government, rather than the distinct three co-equal branches that we now have. The attacks by Obama and certainly among the above mentioned "Jews" that surround Obama are in that category and are attempting to interfere with the power and sovereignty of Israel in a bungling attempt to get a left leaning government. Ain't gonna happen!

"Clinton demands that Israel show its seriousness about peace?

Now that's an insult." - Charles Krauthammer

And just how was Netanyahu's apology to Biden received by Obama? With a series of rockets that killed a Thai visitor. Bumbling Obama is inciting violence, because what he knows about Israel is from Palestinian radicals like Khalid. Israel's response was quick, but as history shows, Israel will be blamed for "disproportionate" reaction. There is no such thing as "disproportionate" reaction when an enemy fires rockets and kills a citizen or a visitor. Bush also was accused by the left for "disproportionate" reaction to 9/11, but the American public did not buy the bull slung from the left. It is only "disproportionate" when it comes from Conservatives; it was not called "disproportionate" when FDR responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor nor was it "disproportionate" to engage in the European theater when it was specifically Japan that attacked the U.S. THAT IS BECAUSE THE LEFT IS MADE UP SOLELY OF HYPOCRITES.

To prove the hypocrisy, Obama, Clinton and others in the administration did not get that the additional housing is already in Israeli territory and strategically would never ... (350 word limit)

I see no great mystery about the Muslim in Chief's hatred for Israel and the Jews, including the naive Jews who voted for him.

The POTUS is a Muslim. He is committed to the destruction of Israel and her people and descendants. Not one single thing he ever does is a "mistake." It is folly to believe that he is "accidentally" doing anything. His actions are well thought out and deliberate.

He is a terrible man who hates America and Americans. You who elected him and still support him are fools. You have helped write the epitaph for not only the United States, but for Israel. You are responsible for the murder of every single baby aborted since the election and your responsibility for this will increase as abortions become easier to procure through the health bill. You will be responsible for the early deaths of every elderly American euthanized through rationing if the health bill passes, in addition to those with disabilities and terminal illnesses who will be targeted through health reform. None of this would be facing us had you not voted for what now occupies our White House. Why could you not have seen what so many of the rest of us saw before the election? What on earth were you people THINKING?

I cannot imagine why Jews in America or anyplace else or ANYONE else could possibly endorse someone like Barack HUSSEIN Obama. With all of my being, I cannot understand it.

The Israelis incur Obama's wrath for deciding to build 1600 apartments in Jerusalem in an area that would never have been turned over to the Palestinians under any peace scenario. The U.S. is terribly insulted by the timing of the announcement, during a visit by Biden. Hillary does Obama's bidding and harangues Netanyahu for this terrible slap in the face to the administration.

But now Hillary is in Moscow. While she is there, the Russians announce they will complete the Bushehr nuclear reactor in Iran by this summer. And now they aren't interested in stiff sanctions, either.

Is anyone insulted? Will there be threats and ultimata? The irony cannot be lost on anyone, especially the Iranians.

Those of us in the United States who love the Lord Jesus Christ and serve Him and have read His Word know that God loves the Jewish people (indeed, He loves all people-even those who hate Him) and He will never allow any of His promises to go unfulfilled. We are witnessing the beginning of the end- in my reading and study of Biblical prophecy is that the United States is not really mentioned as playing a part in the end time events.

This nation is going down and our current President, Barack Hussein Obama, our Muslim President who claims to be a Christian but loves those who hate God and supports actions and sin that God hates and calls abominations- Barack is setting the United States up to enter into the one-world government which will be headed by the one God calls a beast or Anti-Christ. I don't think BHO is the Anti-Christ - he doesn't seem to be able to bring peace and the Bible indicates that this coming world ruler will bring peace for a short time (3-1/2 years). In Ezekiel Chapters 38-39 we see how God will take care of Iran (ancient Persia) and all the other Arab nations along with Russia when they come to attack the Jews... It will take seven months for the Jews to bury those God destroys. God is not finished with the Jews and He will save the remnant through the wrath and judgement that is coming against this world. As for those who love Jesus Christ, we can look up, our redemption draws nigh!!

Obama sat in a Black Liberation Theology church (Marxist inspired) for 20 years, listening to sermon after hateful sermon delivered by Jeremiah Wright, a virulent Jew hater. Obama said he was not aware of Wright's hateful sermons. One must suppose that a combination of people were supremely stupid and believed him and others who hate Israel just like Obama does. During an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Obama said, "You're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith."

How many of you can even imagine that you would make this kind of incredible "mistake" in identifying your religious identity? In an interview with Nicholas Kristof, published in The New York Times, Obama said, "The Arabic call to prayer is the most beautiful sound on earth." Obama then recited the Muslim call to prayer, the Adhan, "with a first-class [Arabic] accent."

The opening lines of the Adhan (Azaan) is the Shahada:

"Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme!
Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme!
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that Muhammad is his prophet! "

Obama hates Israel! Why should anyone be surprised?

Red Hussein is simply implementing the pro-Arab anti-Israel program which was obvious and predictable before he was nominated. There's nothing the slightest bit surprising here. The only question worth asking is whether or not the American people can do anything to stop them or even slow them down. You can assume:

-- A nuclear armed Persia.
-- American backing for Persia against Israel.

In case anybody reading here missed it, have a look at:

This is not just a matter of diplomacy. Obama is initiating concrete military action against Israel. And make no mistake, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan will be getting the shaft in their turn too.
