Biden lets slip why friends of Israel can NOT trust Obama

During the VP debate we heard Biden chide McCain/Palin for following Bush's policy of support for Israel.

"Look, past is prologue, Gwen. The issue is, how different is John McCain's policy going to be than George Bush's? I haven't heard anything yet. I haven't heard how his policy is going to be different on Iran than George Bush's. I haven't heard how his policy is going to be different with Israel than George Bush's. I haven't heard how his policy in Afghanistan is going to be different than George Bush's. I haven't heard how his policy in Pakistan is going to be different than George Bush's" Joe Biden.VP debate October 2 2008

Biden's remark makes it clear Obama will not follow the current Administration's policy toward Israel.

For friends of Israel this is disturbing, because in the past Obama has claimed repeatedly that he supports both McCain and the President in all significant issues related to Israel.

For example, here's Barack Obama's key comments from June 4 2008, when he went to address Jewish American supporters of Israel at an AIPAC convention:
I have been proud to be a part of a strong bipartisan consensus that has stood by Israel in the face of all threats. That is a commitment --that is a commitment that both John McCain and I share because support for Israel in this country goes beyond party.

...Our alliance is based on shared interests and shared values. Those who threaten Israel threaten us; Israel has always faced these threats on the frontlines and I will bring to the White House an unshakable commitment to Israel’s security. That starts with insuring Israel’s qualitative military advantage. I will insure that Israel can defend itself from any threat from Gaza to Tehran. Defense cooperation, defense cooperation between the United States and Israel is a model of success and it must be deepened. As President I will implement a memorandum of understanding that provides $30 billion in assistance to Israel over the next decade, investments to Israel’s security that will not be tied to any other nation.

First we must approve the foreign aid request for 2009 and I understand that Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid are ready to move on that. Going forward we can enhance our cooperation on missile defense; we should export military equipment to our ally Israel under the same guidelines as NATO and I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself in the United Nations and around the world. Across the political spectrum Israelis understand that real security can only come through lasting peace and that is why we, as friends of Israel, must resolve to do all we can to help Israel and its neighbors to achieve it because a secure lasting peace is in Israel’s lasting interest. It is in America’s national interest and it is in the interest of the Palestinian people and the Arab world.

As President I will work to help Israel achieve the goal of two states--a Jewish state of Israel and a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security ...

Now the long road to peace requires Palestinian partners committed to making this journey. We must isolate Hamas unless and until they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel’s right to exist and abide by past agreements. There is no room at the negotiating table for terrorist organizations....

The Palestinian people must understand that progress will not come through the false prophets of extremism or the corrupt use of foreign aid. The United States and the international community must stand by Palestinians who are committed to cracking down on terror and carrying the burden of peacemaking. I will --I will strongly urge Arab governments to take steps to normalize relations with Israel and to fulfill their responsibility to pressure extremists and provide real support for
President Abbas and Prime Minister Fayyad.

Now let me be clear; Israel’s security is sacrosanct. It is non-negotiable; the Palestinians need a State--the Palestinians need a state that is contiguous and cohesive and that allows them to prosper, but any agreement with the Palestinian people must preserve Israel’s identity as a Jewish state with secure, recognized, defensible borders. And Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.

Using powerful, crystal clear rhetoric, Obama said all the right words to put friends of Israel at ease.

So what changes are Obama and Biden planning? On the all the points that matter he says he agrees with Bush and McCain/Palin. Why have they failed to disclose the changes they plan to make to the public? And if there are none, why did Biden attack McCain for supporting the President's Israel policy during the debate?

In fairness, Obama has announced one change. The day after he received a standing ovation at AIPAC he received calls from angry Arab supporters. That same day he urgently went on CNN to reverse his position on an undivided Jerusalem claiming he had been misunderstood.

Misunderstood?
"And Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided"
Obama June 4, 2008 at AIPAC
How much clearer could he have said this in BOTH his prepared written remarks and his speech?

Not only did he do a flip flop on Jerusalem, (one of the most important issues to Israel,) but also Obama has had a history of lying about his support for Israel while maintaining close relationships with people who are sworn enemies of Israel...see for example
Obama's slipperiness on his Israel policy is consistent with his flip flops on many other key issues of importance to Americans. Equally disturbing in many areas of policy he has avoided flip flops simply by failing to specify exactly what he intends to do and by using nuanced words.

Take for instance his position on same-sex marriage. Last night, Biden stated he and Obama were opposed to "redefining Marriage" as anything other than something between a man and a woman. But look what Obama wrote to an LGBT group in July of this year, as reported on Politicker-CA:
Obama stakes out position on California gay marriage ballot initiative Jeff Mitchell July 1 08

Reversing a previous position where he said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the individual states, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would oppose the California ballot proposition seeking a ban against same-sex nuptials.

In a letter read before the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast in San Francisco on Sunday, Obama said he would oppose Prop. 8, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act that would amend the California Constitution to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

"I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination...."

Luckily for voters, when Biden lies, as he did repeatedly last night, he usually makes it so obvious he's lying...("I'm the first Biden in history to go to school" he famously lied in 1988 pretending he was Neil Kinnock)... that he's a lot easier to read than his aloof, poker-faced running mate, Senator Obama.

That's why Americans can NOT afford to take a chance on Obama. He has shown repeatedly he is too slippery to trust on his pre-election policy commitments. He will say anything for a vote. To paraphrase Forrest Gump...the Obama Administration would be like a box of chocolates ...with many poisoned candies on the inside.
