July 6, 2010 - PM Natanyahu and Obama meeting

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 2010

White House Meeting

Bibi Meets Obama Again : Dry Bones cartoon.
The word is that Bibi and Obama are scheduled to meet in Washington next week, on July 6. They were supposed to meet a month ago, on June 1, but that meeting was cancelled because of the May 31st flotilla fiasco.

This White House meeting does not promise to be a jolly event. The enmity of the Obama administration to the State of Israel grows more and more obvious. We can only hope that Prime Minister Netanyahu has the strength to resist the attack that is awaiting him behind the closed doors at the White House.

President Obama to Say Democrats Will Use Reconciliation to Pass Senate Health Care Reform Fix, If Not Given Up or Down Vote

March 02, 2010 6:27 PM

White House officials tell ABC News that in his remarks tomorrow President Obama will indicate a willingness to work with Republicans on some issue to get a health care reform bill passed but will suggest that if it is necessary, Democrats will use the controversial "reconciliation" rules requiring only 51 Senate votes to pass the "fix" to the Senate bill, as opposed to the 60 votes to stop a filibuster and proceed to a vote on a bill.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been awaiting the president’s remarks direction on how health care reform will proceed.

In his remarks, scheduled to be at the White House, the president will paint a picture of what he will say will happen without a health care reform bill – skyrocketing premiums, everyone at the mercy of the insurance industry as recently seen with the 39% premium increases proposed by Anthem Blue Cross in California.

He will note that the “fixed” bill will include the proposal for a new "Health Insurance Rate Authority" to set guidelines for reasonable rate increases. If proposed premium increases are not justifiable per those Health Insurance Rate Authority guidelines, the Health and Human Services Secretary or state regulators could block them.

The plan to pass the bill includes having the House of Representatives pass the Democratic Senate health care reform legislation as well as a second bill containing various “fixes.”

The president will call for an up or down vote on health care reform, as has happened in the past, and though he won't use the word "reconciliation," he'll make it clear that if they're not given an up or down vote, Democrats will use the reconciliation rules as Republicans have done in the past.

White House officials will make the argument these rules are perfectly appropriate because the procedure is not being used for the whole bill, just for some fixes; because reconciliation rules are traditionally used for deficit reduction and health care reform will reduce the deficit; and because the reconciliation process has been used many times by Republicans for larger legislation such as the tax cuts pushed by President George W. Bush.

A White House official says the president will "reiterate why reform is so crucial and what it will mean for American families and businesses: they’ll have more control over their own health care, they’ll see lower costs , and they’ll see an end to insurance company abuses. He’ll note that his proposal includes the best ideas from both parties, and he’ll restate his preference for a comprehensive bill that will reduce premiums and end discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions."

The president will also extend a hand to work with Republicans on measures they have pushed, including $50 million for state grants for demonstration projects to explore alternatives to medical malpractice cases, and a crackdown on Medicaid and Medicare fraud as proposed by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

He will also herald the removal of extraneous provisions in the bill such as the so-called “Cornhusker Kickback,” a deal to secure the support of Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., in which the federal government would pay for Nebraska’s Medicaid expansion; and “Gator-aid,” the provision to shield Florida seniors from cuts to the Medicare Advantage program, secured by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.

Mr. Obama will say that he will be working on exact legislative language in the next few days. Republicans can join him and Democratic congressional leaders of the House and Senate to makes these changes and to pass the bill, but either way the bill will be moving forward.

I'm wondering to what extent there are fixed, binding rules governing the use of reconciliation; and who would enforce those rules. Where are these reconciliation rules defined--a federal statute or what? How could I read a layman's summary of these rules?

If the use of reconciliation to pass this health care bill were actually against the rules, wouldn't some person or body step forward and stop the proceedings? Who would that be and how would it happen?

Or are those who oppose the use of reconciliation here saying that it's not actually against the rules; it's just against the spirit and intent of the provision?

The Democrats are doomed to oblivion if they are successful at pulling this off. The American people may not have long memories, but they remember enough to know when they're being screwed and who's doing it to'em. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are willing to have their fellow Democrats fall on their swords so this democratic "Axis of Evil" can look good on the 6 o'clock news. That's not leadership, that's dictatorship. So, go ahead, Dems, ram this piece of crapola down the American voter's throats. See what happens in November.

Why do we keep calling this health care? It isn't health care because if it was it would take immediate effect. Instead we would have to wait for it for several years. When we hear it is a "crisis that needs immediate attention" but the plans don't provide immediate relief, it is obvious something else is going on. This is nothing more than just another way the government can control its citizens and a disaster. But, we live in a country that has several myopic citizens that vote in pop culture fashion and we as uninformed masses are suffering at the hand of ignorance.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that any part of this bill that contains mandates regarding pre-existing conditions will be thrown out if they use the reconciliation process because it is not aimed at reducing costs (budget), which is what the reconciliation is all about

---

the insurance reforms were already passed by a supermajority. The house will pass that bill-- not via reconciliation. Reconciliation is only being used for small budgetary concerns that the House had about the Senate bill. They actually improve the bill. Reconciliation will also be used to strip the bill of the special deals that nobody liked -- the cornhusker kickback and so on.

----

No it does not. It does not make insurance portable and still puts it on the backs of employers. It does not address giving the smaller insurance companies a chance to compete with the larger ones (purchasing across state lines)

---

Actually, not directly-- or as directly as I would have liked but the exchanges will make increasing portability ever more possible, particularly if Wyden works to get more support for his free choice amendment in the future. In addition, the pressures price conrols will put on insurers will press innovation, and allow smaller insurers with lower overheads an opportunity to be innovative and entrepreneurial-- at least there's potential for that. And the pilot programs could open up further opportunities.

I don't think anyone would say they think this bill is exactly what they would have put out there on their own, right? I would've started with Wyden-Bennet. But I don't think it will get done if we let special interests force the scrapping of it yet again. If we go there, special interests and widespread misinformation campaigns win.

To me, that's not freedom. That's continuing to be bought and sold.

Anyway, gotta roll. The so-called "troll" does actually have a life (though I'm rehabbing an injury and find commenting an amusing pass time. I'm kinda over it for today!)

Why would anyone ever pay for health insurance if you could simply buy it once you get sick?

If you can force an insurance company to pay all of your medical bills for your pre-existing condition, who would ever pay for it in advance?

Posted by: John | Mar 3, 2010 10:40:27 AM

I can't wait 'til it passes. I plan to stage sick-ins at every abortion, AIDS, you-name-your-cause-I've-got-it clinic across our great nation. My tummy hurts - am I at the wrong place? Again?

Posted by: regressive mama | Mar 3, 2010 10:37:11 AM

Soon middle/upper middle class people in blue state cities will pay 50% or more of their income in taxes -that's before all the hidden taxes are added.

85% of Americans are happy with their coverage now. If they want us to pay for the uncoveed they should at laest ask somewhat nicely rather than force this through.

The republicans did NOT use reconciliation to appoint judges or many other non-budgetary things. IF they pass the health care bill this way they will be giving permission for republicans to use reconciliation the same way: whimsically. With 51 votes the Republicans can then kill this bill retroactively next december when they get majorities back.

Be careful what you wish for democrats.

Obama Keeps All-Democratic Health Care Option Open

Newsmax.com

The White House signaled Thursday that an aggressive, all-Democratic strategy for overhauling the nation's health care system remains a serious option, even as President Barack Obama invites Republicans to next week's televised summit to seek possible compromises.

The administration's stance could set the stage for a political showdown, with Democrats struggling to enact the president's top domestic priority and Republicans trying to block what many conservatives see as government overreach.

A senior administration official said Democratic congressional leaders have nearly finished efforts to reconcile two health bills, which the House and Senate passed separately last year with practically no Republican help. Obama will use their legislation to expand coverage to some 30 million and require most Americans to carry insurance as the basis for a proposal that the White House will post online by Monday, three days before the Feb. 25 summit, said the official.

He spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations.

Obama says he is open to Republican ideas for changing the health care system. But many Democrats seriously doubt GOP leaders will support compromises that could draw enough lawmakers from both parties to create a bipartisan majority.

If next week's meeting does not break the logjam, congressional Democrats will face a tough choice. They can pass a highly diluted health care bill or nothing at all, which would send them into the November elections with a high-profile failure despite their control of Congress and the White House.

Or they can use an assertive and contentious tactic, known as reconciliation, to pass a far-reaching health care bill in the Senate without having to face GOP delaying tactics. Democrats lost their ability to block filibusters when Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown won a Senate seat last month.

Both parties have used reconciliation rules in the past. But Republicans have practically dared Democrats to do so on health care, citing polls showing significant opposition to the legislation.

It's unclear whether the House or Senate can muster the necessary votes. Democrats, who now hold 255 of the House's 435 seats, drew only one GOP ally when the House passed its health care bill, 220-215, last November. Since then, one Democrat who voted for the bill has resigned, one has died and a third plans to leave office Feb. 28. Moreover, changes meant to meet Senate demands could peel away enough liberals on one end, and party centrists on the other, to cause the revised bill to fail.

In the Senate, Democrats control 59 seats, and reconciliation rules require only a simple majority. But several Democratic senators have expressed discomfort or outright opposition to using the rules to thwart filibusters on health care.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday that Obama plans to have a health care proposal that "will take some of the best ideas and put them into a framework" ahead of the Feb. 25 summit. The White House has invited Republicans to bring their own proposals, but GOP leaders have treated the event warily at best.

House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio said Thursday, "a productive, bipartisan conversation on health care starts with a clean sheet of paper." His office labeled next week's meeting the "summit of all fears."

But at least one moderate Republican was optimistic about the session.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said if the summit succeeds, a bipartisan bill could be put together and passed within six weeks. "My advice to our Republican leadership is we should view this as a good faith effort and go in there with a consensus list of provisions that we could support and that would make a difference," she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

House Democrats are insisting on several changes to the bill the Senate passed on Christmas Eve, before Brown was elected to succeed the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The changes include reducing or eliminating a proposed tax on generous employer-provider health plans, and eliminating a Medicaid subsidy aimed only at Nebraska.

Also, some House Democrats who oppose legalized abortion are demanding that the Senate's more permissive language on the topic be replaced by the House provisions. It was unclear Thursday how that might be achieved.

The cost of the legislation — about $1 trillion over 10 years — would be paid for through Medicare cuts and a series of tax increases. House officials said Democratic leaders are not yet pressing wary colleagues to back a health care bill under the special procedural rules. That could happen soon, however, if next week's summit fails to produce a bipartisan breakthrough.

House congressional aides said they expect leaders such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to tell colleagues that using all their parliamentary muscle to pass a health care bill — even if it triggers withering criticism from the right — is preferable to facing voters empty-handed this fall.

Put Washington D.C. on a Diet

Sultan Knish.com
From NY to Jerusalem,
Daniel Greenfield
Covers the Stories Behind the News

With great fanfare, Michelle Obama kicked off a national anti-obesity campaign, which if it goes half as well as her toxic vegetable garden, will be forgotten in a week or two. But the problem is that we do need an anti-obesity campaign, just not against people who enjoy an extra hamburger during lunch, but against the politicians in Washington D.C. who have shown no ability to control the rate at which they consume public funds.
Anyone who tripled their weight within one year, would probably be a target of Michelle Obama's finger wagging-- but what about her hubby, who tripled the national deficit in only one year? Someone who eats more than average is only consuming his own food, by contrast Barry Hussein has thrown a party for himself and all his backers, and they've gorged themselves like mad on the United States Treasury.

Obama's new budget has over 46 trillion dollars in spending over the next decade. And we're not done yet. Meanwhile Obama's phony promise of a spending freeze would apply to less than 13 percent, is the equivalent of a diet that cuts out the candy bars, while bulking up on everything else in a five course meal. Moody’s Investors Service is warning that US Treasury Bonds may no longer be AAA rated unless the deficit gets cut. Which will inhibit Washington D.C.'s ability to borrow more money to fund their spending spree.

For all the talk about the dangers of obesity, even the heaviest person is only eating the food that he himself pays for. By contrast the Federal Government is rapidly consuming our "food". As the size of the government increases, so does its spending, and as its spending grows, the productive sector of the economy is consumed in order to fund the growing size of government. Just as a parasite eventually consumes its host, Obama and the Democrats have shown how radical government spending can consume the American economy, through the visible burden of taxation and the invisible burdens of debt.

With the bank and auto company bailouts, with union entanglements and entire new government divisions and positions; the Year of Obama has shown us a vision of a much vaster and all-encompassing government. One that will sink so far into debt as to turn Americans into a sharecropper society, working to pay off government debt. A government debt that requires such high taxation that it squashes any possibility of economic recovery by burdening small businesses and larger companies with its debt.

Since the size of potential Federal spending is virtually unlimited, the size of the debt is only limited to the willingness of China to hold our debt. Because of the inefficiency of Federal spending, which multiplies with each level of complexity, the expansion of the size of the government also automatically increases the inefficiency of its spending, which multiplies expenditures further. The expanding size of government then does not simply cost more money because of its own expenses, but because the expansion itself makes government run less efficiently, and increases the size of existing expenditures.

If we are to go back to Michelle Obama's obesity metaphor, the Federal government is not just gorging itself, because each ton that it adds is actually like adding two tons or three tons. Because the inefficiency turns it into its own multiplier. And by turning unions and companies into another arm of the government infrastructure, the multiplier effect kicks in on the added layers of complexity as well. And what you wind up with is a multilayered system in which one arm of the government bounces money to organizations that redistribute the money, then collect it back again, and pass it along.
Government then becomes a Vertical Monopoly. Nationalized Health Care was an attempt to create a Vertical Cartel in which the government and the various affiliates of the left would control the supply of health care services in America. But this has already happened in other areas. Vertical integration in which the Federal government, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and various interests and banks connected to left wing financiers such as Soros, including Countrywide Mortgage, played a key role in the economic downturn and the mortgage bubble. Their goal was to provide cheap housing for their constituents with government backing, while their debt was rolled in to provide Wall Street profits that would in turn be rolled back into many of the same left wing groups agitating for "Housing Justice".

The entire thing fell apart very conveniently in time to help Obama into the White House. But all that mess was only a minor harbinger of what's to come. Look at the economic chaos in the European Union, where most of the budget simply vanishes without any available explanation, and you can see what kind of bureaucratic nightmare is being modeled by Obama's people.

Here's a small taste. The EU budget is essentially meant to take money from member governments and then redistribute the money back. It has gone from 4 billion in 1970 to over a 140 billion today. Yet the majority of the EU budget cannot be accounted for. For a decade and a half, the European Court of Auditors, whose role is to audit the EU, has refused to sign off on the EU budget. This is the model that many Democrats would have us embrace.

Obama's first year was meant to implement the vertical integration of government and the Democratic party's unions and business backers into a monopoly on many services and forms of employment. What that would do in practice is centralize everything from medical care to many forms of employment, that would require mandatory union membership, and various industries, through bailouts, and cap and trade, into a government-union-corporate complex run out of the White House.

While he has suffered some setbacks in that regard, the outrageous amounts of money he spent were not simply about corruption and greed, but about power. The reconstruction of America was and is part of a grand plan to create a tightly managed society, in which seemingly civilian non-profits, unions, corporations and government agencies would combine to create one vast infrastructure harnessing the public for its revenues and maintaining total political control over the country.

And that is why Washington D.C. needs to be put on a diet. Not simply because its wasteful spending risks destroying the American economy. Not simply because if the government continues its free spending ways, free enterprise in America will be doomed. But because the money is not simply being spent, it's being redistributed in a larger scheme aimed at overseeing the transformation of America. The FDR analogies that Obama's media friends were so fond of, were an illustration of his larger aims. To use an economic crisis to enforce a new hegemony over America. Now just like Lenin's New Economic Policy, which relied on taking two steps backward and one step forward, Obama is prepared to do his own two steps back and one step forward. So long as his ultimate aims proceed on schedule. The same essential faith in a centrally planned economy, and the belief that those who worked to implement it should reap the spoils, that we saw at work in the USSR and in Latin American Marxist dictatorships, is at work here behind the scenes.

We have a government of people who have never worked for a living, except as agitators and lawyers, lecturing Americans on eating too much-- even as they're gorging themselves on America's productivity, jobs and future. Now it's time to put them on a diet.
