Former Italian Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini, considered to be Italy's second-most popular politician, was greeted in the Knesset today with warm applause. Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin, in his remarks, castigated the world's indifference to the threat of terrorism.

Fini, second only to Prime Minister Berlusconi in popularity, currently serves as President of Italy's Chamber of Deputies, and is a member of the center-right People of Freedom party. Speaker Rivlin headed a ceremonious reception ceremony for his Italian counterpart. The two met just six months ago when Rivlin was in Italy at the invitation of the local Jewish community.

Rivlin: No Wonder Turkey Chooses the Pro-Terror States

Rivlin had some pithy, sharp remarks to say about the international community's weak stance towards the threat of global terrorism. He said that given the perception that the anti-terror camp is weak, it's "no wonder" that a country like Turkey chooses to change sides and throw its lot with the terror-supporting nations.
Speaking before the entire Knesset, Rivlin sharply criticized the world's attitude towards Israel in the flotilla incident: "The world sinned by forcing Israel to choose between fighting terrorism and protecting its citizens, or retaining good international relations. This expresses the weakness and helplessness of many countries in the face of the spread of terrorism, and symbolizes the decline and decay of the world's morals."

Nations' Inability to Face the Terrorism Danger

"To my sorrow," said Rivlin, "the world's approach to Israel, especially in Europe, and its lack of support for Israel's fight against the terrorist organizations, have created a dangerous equation: If Israel goes out to war to protect its citizens, it will face a very difficult additional front on the diplomatic and PR plane, and will pay in the form of international isolation, wall-to-wall condemnations, and the cooling off of diplomatic relations. This is an expression of the nations' inability to present an uncompromising position vis-à-vis the terrorism danger."
"Israel had no choice in the flotilla incident," Rivlin said. "Its extensive diplomatic efforts and presentation of various alternatives for getting the goods to Gaza were all rejected by the flotilla organizers. And the world, instead of analyzing the incident - the Israeli efforts that preceded it and the true motives of the organizers – most nations chose to… prefer their own narrow interests instead of the values that are supposed to guide them… Most of the nations chose to join the festival of hypocrisy and put Israel on trial in a kangaroo court."

Countries Seek Out the Rising Power

Rivlin the delivered the final punch: "In light of the weakness being broadcast by the international community towards terrorism and the organizations that back, is it any wonder that there are countries who find it more attractive to join the axis of evil than to join the European Union? Is  it any wonder that there are governments that are willing to wipe out in one shot their countries' achievements and to initiate in an institutionalized manner the strengthening of a debased murderous organization?"

Referring specifically to Turkey, which has essentially erased its good relations with Israel of late, Rivlin said, "I don't know the hidden motives of Turkey's Prime Minister [Erdogan], but it is not hard to recognize his recent choices as a new strategy that is adapted to the changing balance of power between the countries that support terrorism and those that fight it. Unfortunately, the world's apathy and the lack of support for those countries that fight against terrorism also contribute to the process in which Turkey is driven into the outstretched arms of [Gaza-Hamas leader] Haniyeh and [Iran's] Ahmadinejad. And now we watch with concern as other countries follow Turkey's lead and begin to wonder which is the rising power and to which camp is it more worthwhile to belong."

Rivlin thanked his guest for Italy's strong stance on behalf of Israel "at all of the most recent diplomatic junctions, beginning with Operation Cast Lead, and the Durban conference, and more recent ones as well. Your country stands firmly behind the values of the free world, without caving in to cold and narrow interests."
Fini, for his part, told Rivlin during their meeting this morning that "Israel is democracy at its best… The demand for an inquiry into the flotilla incident is an example of the world's pre-conceived notions [against Israel]." (IsraelNationalNews.com)
